Otowa-no-taki, Kyoto

by hopang

An interesting and last part of the tour to Kiyomizu Temple Complex is the Sound of the Feathers Waterfall known as Otowa-no-taki in Japanese. This is regarded as one of the ten most famous pure water sites in Japan. This is a favourite place for local and foreign tourists to drink water from the sacred fall not because we are thirsty but because by drinking the sacred water, it will bring the visitor good health and good fortune! Please queue up and take the cup and have your share of the sacred water. Many visitors drink the water just to have their photographs taken!

Sanju-no-to, Kyoto

by hopang

Sanju-no-to is located directly behind Sai-mon and forms part of the Kiyomizu Temple Complex in Kyoto. It is a three storied pagoda which is the tallest three storied pagoda in Japan. Sanju-no-to was erected in 1143. It is undoubtedly a landmark at the complex as well as in Kyoto. The pagoda was repainted in 1987 with bright colours. The colour is typical of a Buddhist temple which reflects the architectural styles of the Chinese that came to Japan together with Buddhism.

Nandai-mon Gate (also known as The Great South Gate) is located on the southern section of Todaiji Temple in Nara. It is actually the front gate to the temple. The temple has eight pillars and was made of wood, one of the best preserved wooden structure in Nara. This structure was a reconstruction of the original which was destroyed in the fire in 1435. The present structure was erected in 1438.

Nara Park, Nara

by hopang

Nara Park is located at the foot of Mount Wakakusa in the city of Nara. It was founded in 1880 and is today managed by Nara Prefecture. The park covers a total area of approximately 500 hectares. It is the largest park in Nara. It has lovely scenery as depicted in the photo on the right.Nara Park is home to approximately 1,200 sika deers. They are allowed to roam freely in the park. We had seen local and foreign tourists feeding the deers in the park. We are not sure whether it is a good idea! It is also home to Todaiji Temple and Nara National Museum. The park is a popular tourist attraction. Don't miss Nara Park when you visit Nara Daibutsu nearby.

by Nomad_2001

Tokyo has a fabulous zoo that also warrants a visit!!! In addition to the zoo, you MUST get a haircut from a Japanese barber!!! I enjoyed a haircut by a Japanese barber right across from a Pachinko parlor (Pachinko is something like a cross between a Vegas slot machine and a pinball game: it is the gambling machine of choice in Japan and legal). While the haricut is probably much more than one would typically spend in the states (but note that there are some spa-like aspects included in the cost), the experience is unforgetable. Japanese barbers are masters of the profession and really work magic: it seemed my barber devoted individual attention to every single hair on my head!

The toilets/bathrooms in Japan

by joiwatani

Of all the things that I remember in Japan, toilets and bathrooms come to mind. I can't find any other place I had been which has the most complicated toilet. The toilets in Japan are very modern, equipped with all the gadgets necessary to finish your "thing". In fact, the Japanese seemed to be obsessed with modern toilets. You can see toilets for sale even in shopping malls. In the United States, you will only see toilets for sale at the hardware stores like Home Depot, Lowes or Ace. In Japan, you can see different kinds of toilets and they put so much gadgets and technology in their toilets to attract buyers! If you go to local shopping malls, the bathrooms are differentiated to "Western toilet" to "Japanese toilet". What that means is that the "western toilet" is higher. Some toilets are so modern: the seat is heated, the toilet flashes right away even before you sit down as it adds...

The Bonsai Trees in Japan

by joiwatani

There are many things I love about Japan but the best part I really enjoyed are looking at the bonsai trees. It is my life-long quest to raise a bonsai tree myself. Every spring time, I will go out and trim my Japanese maple trees to become bonsai. I strived hard. Then, I realized after buying so many bonsai trees, that it is a lost cause for me! Everything I bought for died! What is bonsai? The Japanese word "bonsai" basically means a plant, tree, or group of trees or plants growing in a container (from bon "basin" and sai "to plant). Bonsaid is all about growing miniature trees in the form of full-size mature trees, mostly using the same species and vaireties from which the full-size trees are grown. Bonsai is a living art frorm that can provide hours, weeks, months or even a lifetime of studying and understanding trees. (The Complete Practical Encyclopedia of Bonsai by Ken Norman,...
