I was in Utsunomia twice, once on my way to Nikko, and second on my way to Kuroiso. I found that the main level is PACKED with places to buy food. There are vending machines, stands, even grocery stores! including the common Newdays Mini.
Outside, you will see the river that runs by. If you have seen FLCL, it looks like the one in the ending credits. It seemed like a cross between central Tokyo and downtown Matsumoto. I enjoyed it very much.

If you happen to make it to Utsunomiya sometime in your life then a walk on Orion Dori (Street) is a must. It is especially fun when there is a festival or when there are open concerts. Personally shopping has never been one of my favorite activities but Orion Dori is a great place to see and be seen by people.
*Warning beware of people riding their bikes. There not supposed to but they do.

Utsunomiya is the capital city of Tochigi (pronounced to-chi-ghi), thus is very populous (population about 0.5 million. Utsnomiya Station of JR (Japan Railways's Shinkansen stops) is a microcosm of generations, nationalities and status of people, including the homeless. It is fun to watch teenage girls with high-sole shoes and boots (photo).
