Nihombashi is famous for two reasons.
1.- it's the site of the oldest western style department store in Japan - the Nihombashi Mitsukoshi.
2.- it's known for Nihombashi Bridge, the point from which all distance is measured. - in the 1960's an expressway was built right over the top of it!..:(...talks in the Koizumi cabinet about plans on making the expressway under ground to preserve the beauty of the bridge......dont hold your breath..not sure when that will happen...
Also in Nihombashi you'll find Tokyo Stock Exchange.
The nearest station is Kayabacho Subway Station on the Hibiya Subway Line or the Tozai Subway Line.
Leave the station via exit 10 or 11.

In the area Nihombashi close to Tokyo Station is the eponymous Nihombashi Bridge that represents the de-facto not present center of Tokyo. In the past all major streets originated at the (at that time) wooden bridge. In 1911 after traffic had increased and the old bridge was not strong enough anymore the present bridge was built in renaissance style and is the oldest bridge in Tokyo. Quite oddly, a highway was built right over the river across the bridge.
Nihombashi is also the financial district of Tokyo with the stock market, the Bank of Japan in its old European building as well as the headquarter of the department stores Mitsukoshi and Mitsui. With additional quarters of shopping Nihombashi is a good alternative to other shopping areas like Ginza.
