Time Zone: Rush Hour
  • Tip Rating:
  • Almost every traffic in Tokyo gets too heavy within these time zone.7:00-9:3017:00-19:00I mean almost all. Both railways and roadways including The Metropolitan Expressway.
Every train will get difficult for you travellers to ride on because it will be jam-packed. You will feel like as if you are a grain of rice in a sushi roll.
A car won't move and you will see the tail lamps of the preceding car lightning red all the time.

Just avoid to get on a train and to get in an taxi or a bus between those rush hours on a weekday.

    Walk!

Tokyo Tower: Tokyo Tower - Too expensive!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Be advised that the the shopping mall underneath the tower and most importantly the elevators to the first observation deck is at 860¥ very expensive. Moreover, the next obeservation deck, which is at 250m height 100m higher than the first, costs around another 500¥.

If you should go there, don't bother going up to the second level because there's nothing up there and not much more to see. Mostly everything from another angle. Going there can be good, on very clear days for a view of Mt. Fuji, what actually is very unlikely, or at night.

Go to Shinjuku's Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (Tochô) for a free view of Tokyo from above. And the difference in height is marginal.

    Facilities: ATM Machines
  • Tip Rating:
  • It seems like there are very few CIRRUS machines (and more PLUS machines). Also, be careful when entering amount as sometimes the machine asks you "How many 10,000 Yen notes would you like" rather than "How much Yen do you want to withdraw"

Other than that I would have to say that the Japanese are the nicest people in the world. Japan is the safest country I have been to.

Time Zone: This is the real Trap, Sinjuku Rail station
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you pass this station or any main stations at the rush hours.

You are well traped with the crowds just walking past you like as if you don't exists next to them.
You will be pushed by the commuter and by the platform crowd controllers.

Try it your self and just experience the fun.

There is non, or you take it or leave it and stay at home,

Another way to do it is take the fisrt train normaly at 4.45AM, or travel off peak after 11AM. by then you have lost the whole day.

Tokyo Tower: Don't Pay When You Can See For Free

The Tokyo tower, built in 1958 and designed after Paris' Eiffel Tower, can be seen from quite a distance. At the base there are several tacky tourist attractions and admission is charged to go the top.

You're better off making your way over to the Shinjuku area and seeing the aerial view of Tokyo from the Tokyo Metropolitian Government Office, which is much higher, and FREE! A few more details are included on my 'things to do' page.

    Tokyo Tower: Tokyo Tower
  • Tip Rating:
  • Although many people recommend visiting Tokyo Tower, please be warned that its entrance fee is exorbitant and, in my opinion, not worth the price. I think it costs something like Y800 to get to the first deck and an additional Y600 for the second. Considering that Tokyo City Hall in Shinjuku is free and Tokyo's tallest building, Sunshine City in Ikebukuro, is only about Y600, Tokyo Tower is a rip off.

One caveat: I've been to the base of Tokyo Tower but have never actually gone up.

If you decide not to heed my advice and go to Tokyo Tower anyway, make sure that it is a very clear day so that it will be worth it.

If you're in the Roppongi/Tokyo Tower area, I suggest using the money you would have spent at Tokyo Tower on a nice meal near the top of one of the taller buildings. You'll get a nice view and may even have Tokyo Tower in the view!

Otherwise for a cheaper and better view of the city try the City Hall in Shinjuku or the Sunshine Building in Ikebukuro. Or the new Mori Tower in Roppongi Hills.

TOKYO DISNEY LAND (also TOKYO DISNEY SEA) and NEW TOKYO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT(NARITA) are actually located in Chiba prefecture, not in Tokyo.

Amusement Facilities / Theme Parks: Disneyland Merchandises
  • Tip Rating:
  • These shops at the entrance sell all the Disneyland merchandises. You may just keep swiping you plastics (credit cards) because all your friends expect you to bring back some souvenirs.

Most of the merchandise that sold in any theme parks are mostly produced some other part of the world (like Taiwan ot China) & fetch a very high premium price.

But for memorable sake, do we have a choice?

Dining / Drinking: Be careful walking into any bar....
  • Tip Rating:
  • When going out drinking in Tokyo, stay on the beaten path. You shouldn't just arbitrarily duck into "any"place just because it looks like a bar(with no english writing in front). You could get fleeced just buying a beer. Some of these establishments could be speciality clubs, and that drink will cost you a fortune.

There are some great bars in Roppongi, neon -lit, loud,
fun and affordable (for Japan that is).
