 | |  |  | Airport <=> Mid-City: AIRPORT LIMOUSINE BUS for FREE! | |  |  | |  |
A very important and cost-saving way to go to/from Tokyo and Narita Airport for us was to ue the Airport Limousine Bus which should normally cost around 3,000 yen for adults one way and half price for kids under 12 y.o. However, we saved on the fares to and from the airport to our hotel in Tokyo for more than AU$200 . How did we do this? Before we left, in my researches about Japan and Tokyo, I discovered our Asia Miles frequent flyer memberships have been offering rides on the Airport Limousine Bus to and from Narita Airport and Tokyo using the mileage points. Hence, I know we have about 13,000 points sitting in each of our accounts from a few years' back from our trip to Hongkong and Manila so I redeemed them for those rewards. It took just under two weeks to get the redemption letter which we showed to the bus office at NArita plus our Asia Miles cards. The only tricky part was explaining about them at the bell services of our hotel. The staff was not very familiar with the scheme but after my polite insistence and suggestion that she ring the airport office as I have previously enquired about it and it is fine to use them from the hotel. I asked if I should redeem/book there for our trip back to the ariport but was told the bell services will book us a day before we leave. So another tip here is, be insistent without being rude as sometimes if a hotel staff is new or young, etc, that person my not be well versed about certain rules/schemes. I am determined as I wasn't about to pay extra as each bus trip cost us 5,000 points! This bus is very convenient as it took us straight to the doorstep of our hotel!( Some needed to ride a taxi near their hotel after getting off at Tokyo Prince!) From Narita Airport to Ueno Station: Cheapest: Keisei Line, 1000 yen, all seats unreserved Best: Keisei Skyliner, 1920 yen, all seats reserved and super comfortable, smoking cars available From Narita Airport to Tokyo Station: JR Narita Express (N'EX), 2940 yen, all seats reserved, can also take to Shinjuku or Ikebukuro stations Any of these train rides are about one hour. Trains depart every 30-60 minutes, depending on time of day. Tickets can be purchased at the airport on the arrivals floor. Tickets for JR trains can be purchased with credit card at http://www.world.eki-net.com/e_Default.asp JR Yamanote Line: this is probably the cheapest way to get around Tokyo, but probably a little more confusing than the subway for the non-Japanese speaker. This line is basically a loop around Tokyo. There are other JR lines, but they're kind of confusing. TRTA Subway: consists of 12 different subway lines, all conveniently color-coded. Kind of expensive; get an all-day pass for 710 yen Leave a Comment Theme: Train

 | |  |  | Airport <=> Mid-City: Listen carefully: do not take... | |  |  | |  |
Listen carefully: do not take a taxi from Narita Airport. Narita is quite distant from Tokyo itself; you will only waste a ton of money. There are 3 reasonable ways to get to Tokyo from Narita. 1) Take the airport limo bus. It's about Y3000 and takes about 2 hours or more, depending on traffic. 2) Take the Keiou train line to Ueno Station. I think it's about Y1600 total. 3) Easily the BEST WAY is to take the Narita Express, which is a bullet train that stops at Ueno and Shinjuku. It costs about Y3500 and takes about 1 hour. You don't have to change trains, it's spacious, comfortable and there are no problems with luggage or crowding. Take a train/subway. They are easy to use, cheap, ubiquitous and safe. Price depends on distance. Getting from Shinjuku to Ueno (the other side of Tokyo) costs about Y190 (about US$2). The most well-known line is the JR Yamanote-sen, which circles Tokyo. It's slow, but will be useful for tourists. BTW, JR is the company running mostly above-ground trains and non-local lines. Subway is oft-times better for cross-town travel. Try to get a subway map to plan your trips beforehand (they fit in your wallet). One problem is that cramming yourself onto one at rush hour is a pain, but an experience you will savor forever after. Another problem is that you may have difficulty determining how to get somewhere, because Tokyo train maps are somewhat complicated. Lucky for you, most of them are also written in English. Remember that trains stop running at about midnight. If you miss the last train, you're stuck for the night until 5-6am. Take a taxi only when your destination is fairly close; crossing the city with a taxi can cost you Y6000 to Y10000, especially if its late (because the rates rise). It's a truly nerve-wracking experience to watch the meter rise as your taxi is stuck in traffic...! Leave a Comment Theme: Train
