Law / Rule: Photographing the Police... Don't do it.
  • Tip Rating:
  • I made the mistake of attempting to photograph the koban in front of Shibuya Station. An officer noticed me and immediately gave me the "crossed arms" in the air, and came running over. Apparently, they don't take kindly to being photographed.
Other than this one incident, the Japanese police have been nothing buy polite and very helpul.

Traffic / Transportation: Don't get caught in the train webs!
  • Tip Rating:
  • The train lines in Tokyo are well-organised,, and you can get virtually anywhere by some sort of ground or subway transport.

The problem is that there are many ways to get to Rome, and if you catch the wrong train, you may still get to your end-destination, just that you end up travelling a much longer road or stop at many more stations in between. Remember that an Express line is one where it doesn't stop at all stations along the way, whereas local trains usually make stops at several minor places.

If you attempt to figure out your route only at the station itself, you'll most probably end up studying the "spaghetti" map to no avail. I recommend that you get a detailed map before you set out, and know where you need to make your connections before you even leave the hotel.

There are a large number of religions in Japan like Omn, The White's and so on. Most of the religions teaches us not to fight with each other but the meaning has been distorted, they do love each other but among the followers only, for non believer, they consider as alien or outsider. This large group of people have their own way to collect the fund to their God, if you have involved of this, they can never be escaped from it. Must avoid from the beginning.

Japanese Government tried to stop this but has been threaten several times with terror here and there.

People to Avoid: Generally, guys should feel...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Generally, guys should feel fairly safe in Japan.
For the girls, be careful of taking the crowded commuter trains between 7am-9am and 6pm-11pm. It is a known fact that there are gropers (sukebe) who like to molest foreign females and go undetected in crowded trains.
Also beware of what I call the 'Ruthies' - basically 60+ year old Japanese women who will do anything to get that seat. Be prepared to be pushed aside. Grin and bear it.
Public toilets at the train stations can be a little basic. They are generally the squat type - make sure you face towards the jet and flush only once you have moved away to avoid being 'splattered'. Always carry your own little supply of tissues as none are generally provided.

Public Peace: Japan is considered as one of...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Japan is considered as one of the most peaceful and safest countries in the world. The community-based security system, the so-called Koban (residential police box) are the backbones of police activities in order to maintain public peace. A Koban is located in urban areas where crimes and accidents are relatively frequent. A Koban is generally manned by one resident officer with his family. The system is drawing worldwide attention as a major factor behind safety in Japan.

Inconvenient Things: Homeless Tokyo and Garbage Cans
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you take a walk around Tokyo, especially near the parks, you will probably notice many homeless people along the sidewalks or in makeshift homes. It is very unlikely that you will find garbage cans anywhere on the streets, though. The Japanese people say that the reason this is true, is that the Japanese want to discourage homeless people going through the trash and disturbing people. So, if you have anything you wish to dispose of, you must enter a shop or another building and tell an employee. Most likely, they will throw it away themselves.

People to Avoid: If you're a Western guy and...
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you're a Western guy and you go out on the town in Roppongi (as most Western guys do at some point), then you'll have a much better time if you understand the following:

    a) a lot of the women you will meet are strippers and hostess girls, mainly from Thailand, Korea and the Philipines, with some Europeans - there are very few Japanese

    b) they usually hit the bars around 3am, when the clubs they work in close

    c) they go to the bars to unwind and relax after work - they are most definitely not there because they want to meet guys...

    d) consequently your chances of going home with one of them are precisely zero, although they will be very happy to let you make a fool of yourself buying them drinks all night at US$8 a pop for a bottle of Bud

Photo: a guy who didn't quite get it... he's going to have a big dent in his plastic at the end of the month.

The acid test of whether or not they're just out to have a good time at your expense is whether or not they ever buy you a drink. Try to find out if this is going to happen early on, before you've spent too much on them...

Cash / Money: If you're from the United...
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you're from the United States or Western Europe, find out where the nearest Citibank or Post Office is as soon as possible. Beware - there aren't that many Citibanks, although Post Offices are fortunately common. The three Citibanks I know of are in Shinjuku, Shinjuku-sanchohme and Roppongi. The one in Roppongi is easiest to find - it's right on Roppongi Crossing by Almond (don't ask, you'll know when you see it), although rather unusually it's inside a building on the second floor, so you have to take an elevator up from the street.

Why do you need to find a Citibank (or Post Office)? Because, in contradiction of what I've read elsewhere on VT, Citibank ATMs or Post Office Savings ATMs are the only ones you'll be able to draw money out of with VISA cards. Oh sure, most of the Japanese banks' machines have VISA symbols on them, but try to use them and your card will be spat back out at you and you'll be informed (probably in Japanese) that 'your card is difficult to read'.
