  • Tip Rating:
  • Please take note, if you are in Japan on a tourist Visa it is Illegal to be without your passport..... even to visit the shops! If you do not carry your passport you can be arrested and even deported.

Traffic / Transportation: Avoid morning rush hour
  • Tip Rating:
  • unless you enjoy crowds, stinky old men, sick people, claustrophobia and masochism, avoid the morning traffic at all cost. Tokyo is by far the worst, but some stations are particularly terrible like Kitasenju where it gets so crowded they have people dedicated to push people into the car every morning. Some of the inaka (country side) train stations are just as bad if not worse. In those areas, the train comes infrequently so the cars are jammed even when you thought it impossible for any additional people to be pushed in.

Also, if you insist on going in the morning, avoid bringing a heavy backpack. Or use the luggage racks to store your goods. You might offend someone if your backpack is sticking in their face.

    Night Out: Watch your drinks
  • Tip Rating:
  • When drinking in bars in Roppongi, be careful of who you accept drinks from.

I was at western style pub/nightclub during last years world cup and was enjoying myself, when aan ex-pat aussie 'stunner' approached me.
She began talking to me & gee she was hot, low cut dress at the back.......
Anyway she went on to say she was a hostess at a bar, etc etc.

We went our separate ways, when 10 minutes later she came back with a shot of something.
BANG, can't remember much more than that, except waking up 6 hours later in a massage parlour with some thai girl walking on my back!!!!

I was really unwell that whole next day.

It could have been worse, but proved a reminder to me how careful you must be when in unfamiliar surrounds.

    Public Peace: Take necessary precautions!
  • Tip Rating:
  • In Japan you can stay cool yourself, I mean, most of the people don't commit crime, there are maybe 1 or 2 but mostly they are very conservative about their family dignity and they are just respectful and kind.

    Law / Rule: Medication
  • Tip Rating:
  • You need to check carefully any over-the-counter medicines which maybe commonly used in the U.S. or other countries, into Japan. Some of these you might not think twice about but they are not all allowed and Japanese customs can be very strict about this. Most doctors in Japan however can prescribe something similar to any you find banned to get you through your trip.

If you have any prescription medication, you should consult your local Embassy or consulate prior to departing.

Night Out: I found Tokyo to be a very...
  • Tip Rating:
  • I found Tokyo to be a very safe place to visit and at no point did I feel threatened. The people are very nice and friendly and if you take a map out to look at it, someone will come over and ask you if they can help. The only warning I can think of is to make sure you step onto the right train. When the train approaches you have to check it is the right one you need as sometimes trains go whizzing past the station you wanted to get off at and you spend the next hour trying to get back :-)

  • Tip Rating:
  • When walking down a sidewalk or crowded street, hearing a small, jingling bell behind you, move quickly because someone on a bicycle is in a hurry.

Cash / Money: The most important thing is...
  • Tip Rating:
  • The most important thing is make sure you have plenty of yen when out for the day. Places to exchange money are extremely difficult to find. Most ATM's will not accept bank cards unless issued by a japaneese bank. Small businesses are resistant to accepting dollars in an emergency and although you may think you have enough yen it can go quickly when there are so many things you may want to try. Large Hotels can help in exchanging ,but if it is not your own be prepared for possible refusal.
