I am not exactly sure of the reason, but the Japanese were very fervent about wearing a hat while walking on the trails to the shrines in Daisen. In many cases they put their hats on whenever they went outdoors. As we walked on the trail, they were constantly advising me to put on my hat (even the Canadian guide). I don't particularly like to wear hats, so I never put mine on. Nothing bad happened to me, but they really prefer everyone to wear some sort of hat. So, if you have a hat, then you should appease them and wear it.
