Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Make sure to wear clothing and shoes that are appropriate for hiking on a trail. Don't wear anything that you would be upset to get dirty.
Miscellaneous: Bring bug spray! The mosquitos are not a problem, but they are there, and for some reason, they seem to prefer foreign blood!
If you take time to really look at all of the sights along the trail, you will probably end up spending quite a bit of time on the trail. I suggest that you bring some food/snacks and water with you to avoid discomfort while on the trail. It's a lot more fun to walk around when you're not hungry or thirsty!
Also, for some reason, the Japanese always like to wear hats/caps when walking on this trail. They told me that I should have one, too, although I never did put mine on. So, I suppose you'll just have to use your judgement on this one.
