Gather your thoughts.

by huggy93

A time to reflect on the past, present or future and also look at historically beauty and feel calm. I don't consider Shrines and Temples to be tourist 'traps', I consider them to be a must see!! Architectually, some of the buildings, structures and statues left in awe!I've been going through some unsettling times recently and psychologically, I need to re-focus on what's important. I felt that I could do so at places such as these.I felt at peace!

Japanese practicing their English on tourists

by Randyi66

This might not be a trap or even a danger per se, but I though that it's worth mentioning that you might run across a Japanese person or two who wants to pracitice their English on you. I'm not talking about somebody who passes by and just says "hello," or somebody who sees you in need of help and assists, I'm talking about people who will stop you and begin a whole spiel on some subject. My family and I were walking around Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park and right as we were going to walk toward the museum, an elderly Japanese man on a bicycle came up and said in English, "Excuse me, I'm not a salesperson, but I would like to tell you that if you're interested in going into the Museum you can take this walkway, turn left, go through the doors and your can purchase your tickets at the counter." He said some other detailed instructions after that but by that time I was already "done" with...

Sony Center in Tokyo

by misodiva

This really didn't have much on the floors, some displays, but most not really interactive. The gaming room had games, but they were in Japanese, so hard to figure out. Area to buy Sony products, but the prices were better at Bic Camera or other stores in Tokyo

Kowai Farm

by xpythias

This is not so much a tourist trap as it is MISLABELED in Lonely planet. I trekked all the way up to morioka and then caught a really expensive bus to see this farm and it's marvelous views of Mt. Iwate. Well, it was a place for little kids. Everything shut down around 5 pm, including the busses out of there, which I unfortunately did not discover until after I had taken a hotel room (which by the way was IN a train car), and the main grounds took me all of 30 minutes to cover. But I did get to visit the petting zoo before it closed... Bring a book and prepare for a long long walk to the nearest train station the next morning, as the busses don't start running again until after 10:30 am. I actually ended up sticking out my thumb and hitched a ride. Skip it, unless you have kids.

Yakuza

by stonefree

As many people consider, Japanese people are harmless and Japan is one of the most crime-free countries in the world. But, as you may have already heard of this, yakuzas do exist. As long as you being a traveller, you don't have to be so scared but I suggest not to have any contact with them. Make an emergency phone call "110" to get help by police when in trouble.

Yokohama tower

by islander1000

well, nothing is really cheap in Japan, but if you want to spend money in excess, go up some 30 floors on one of the fastest elevators (20$) and buy... a postcard (2$), chokolade(10$), a coffee (in plastic cup) sets you back 5$ go to ground foor and searh for bakeryone of the few good bread purchase stations have a cup of coffee(10$) in "coffee-shop", where you can read comix (with sexual or violent content, very trendy it seemed) and watch locals

Travelling without reading Japanese....

by tompt

It is difficult to travel through the country without reading some Japanese. Because Japanese is so difficult to read , I found that it was good to have a map with the names of cities in English and in Japanese. That way you can compare the signs and soon you will know how for example Osaka or Nagoya is written.

Though most Japanese write and...

by Pavlik_NL

Though most Japanese write and read English pretty well, not many will use this language as for their pronounciation and the fact that Japanese want to do the honourable thing by - if speaking English - speak it perfect. However, some universities have on their bulletinboards annoncements from English-students that want to exercise their English by giving free tours. This way the tourist is helped and they as well. Also ... it might happen that - in their honourable hospitable and helpful way - a inhabitant of Japan sends you in the wrong direction rather then telling you that he/she doesn't know the way him/herself. Don't be angry, but know that the true Japanese spirit remains a mystery for us.

by Hippybonobo

One of the biggest tourist traps has to be Tokyo tower. After being plied into a tiny elevator your taken to a small cramped platform above the smog of Tokyo. Where you're competing with the locals to look down at the high rise towers. The only thing that made the visit interesting was watching Mt. Fuji in the sunset, but even that had i had to get past everyone
