by whoyourdaddy

In Odaiba at the Toyota Mega Web. DO NOT, i repeat DO NOT enter the ride called Futureworld or Futurama ... It is a rip off at almost 1000 yen being just a short and dull 'virtual reality' roller coaster ride. Do not be impressed with the cute uniforms the ushers wear and the posters are just bull.Save your money and take the Ferris Wheel instead.

TaxisDo not even go near them unless you have lots of cash to burn. The meter shoots off like a rocket and you will be in the backseat counting off your last miserable 10yen coin hoping that you can pay the fare.

by timtrina

Not really a Tourist Trap, but we were really dissappointed with Tokyo Disneyland. If you are wanting to go anticipating a day full of wild rollercoaster rides, etc. - forget it. Half the park seemed to be shops! It was beautiful though, and so perfectly presented.

by doronjyo

Be careful when in areas such as Shinjuku. This area has many foriegners that are passing out little cards for clubs. Quite frequently these places will not have the prices for drinks posted and at most places in Japan you don't pay until you are leaving. Make sure to ask and get a reciept for your drinks at places like this to avoid a large unfair bill at the end of the evening.

by Andrei222

The only 'trap' I can think of is Pachinko--you will not go far in any city without seeing the popular gambling place. But this is a 'trap' no more for a gaijin than a Nihonjin. You will, no doubt, be spending a large amount of money on your trip--why give it away to a machine?

by Tomoe

Cherry Blossom season! If you choose to go when the world and his wife are also there, you won't enjoy it as much because of the crowds. In England we have just as beautiful blossoms during Spring. I went to Japan in January/February and everywhere I went had only a few other tourists there, and often I was the only one. The Japanese are rightly very proud of the beautiful sights in their country and visit them all en masse, and it can be extremely difficult to see the real beauty or feel the serenity of temples, gardens, shrines etc. The only downside of going in winter is that some museums and guided tours are not available until March. Fujiyama was closed above the first station, some of the must-sees in Nikko were closed, so I didn't go this time. Oh yeah, and having your suitcase filled with cold weather gear and not enough space left over for your souveniers....

by j-san

what they are in fact is office workers and high school girls... paying 10,000Yen to be dressed up as apprentice geisha (maiko-san), paraded along the streets of historic Kyoto and then have their photos taken to remember the day. As I was taking the picture of the sign at this store, the owner called out to me to try it, adding 'we get lots of foreign customers!'. I read that the REAL maiko-san are not too happy about this practice as it gives people the wrong image of them.

Be careful where you eat. A cup of tea can easily cost $5- With no free refills. You may also get a piece of shrimp or two for the same price if you're not careful. Look and see what others have on their plates. If it looks like this photo, you may want to go somewhere else for a better deal.

by JJB

I think the Tokyo Disneyland is a waste of time if you've been to LA's or Florida's.One of the smallest theme park / amazment park I've been to so far. The highest rating roller coster ride is like a kiddy ride. =P There are other amazment parks in Japan better than this.

by huesten

Taxi can cause heart attack to travellers who were not been forewarn of its astronomical fare. I was told that a trip from Narita Airport to Tokyo city can cost as much as S$200. If you try to flag a taxi for a short trip to a few blocks away, the driver would rather not earn your money but give you a rub down for not exercising your legs.
