Further afield from Suganuma lies Ainokura, another gassho zukuri settlement midway up a mountain. This prettier settlement's houses are dispersed on the different levels of rice terraces and is a photographers' hotspot.
Makes for a good stroll in the cooling evenings or mornings. Do not miss the matsuri held at the nearby shrines if you come in end September.

Enroute from Shirakawa-go to Shimonishi, you'd first pass by Suganuma, the cut off gassho zukuri settlement set in the valley. A smallish settlement with less than 20 houses, the mountain backdrop and quiet solitude of the village reminds you of what the past may be like.
As in Shirakawa-go or Ainokura, you can pay to see what the interior looks like or consider a night at one of the houses doubling up as a lodge.
