Buy a JR Pass BEFORE you leave home!

by Neat001

The pass is only available for purchase outside the country. The JR Pass is good for all Japan Rail lines throughout the country and this also includes subway/metro lines and some bus routes. Buy your pass through a tour operator (like JTBI) and then you pick it up when you arrive at the airport or train station. When you are travelling always try to book yourself a seat in advance so that you don't get a smoking car (yuck) and are guaranteed a seat to your destination. Trains are absolutely the easiest way to get anywhere!

Train Pass

by GlobeTrottin

Be VERY careful about looking at the time-tables for your trains. We had a Japan Rail Pass, and didn't realize that some of the fastest trains were not included in the pass.Make sure you are careful about last-trains. We wound up getting stranded in a station once!Train Conductors are very particular about checking your pass.On another note- the rail pass is fantastic. We were able to cover 6 cities in a week's time.Make a 'hub' such as Osaka or Tokyo, and take day trips out (Hiroshima, Nara, Kyoto etc.)That way you can maximize your pass, and cover a lot of ground.

Leaving the harbour

by SLLiew

There is nothing like leaving the harbour to be reminder that Japan is archipelago of volcanic islands rising from the Pacific Ocean off the Asian continent.Take opportunities of the many ferries and small boats that goes to the neighboring islands off the main island of Honshu. Here is a picture of leaving for Miyajima island. Two ferry lines run from Miyajima-guchi (near Hiroshima) to Miyajima Island. Tthe trip takes about 10 minutes.

Long Distance Buses

by salisbury3933

Long distance and overnight buses tend to be a slower and cheaper option than flying. They tend to be comfortable, and relatively inexpensive. On some routes, they are a better option than the train, but those routes are few and far between.

Legal double park in Tokyo

by SLLiew

In Tokyo, there are limited parking. Many Japanese takes the train to work and use their cars during the weekend. And rent parking space near their homes because usually their house do not have space for own garage.Surprised to see this creating way of doubling car park space in Tokyo. Fancy having another car parked above yours. Double park has a new different meaning.

Bicycling to train stations

by SLLiew

Was pleasantly surprised when I stayed with a Japanese family. That on a working day to bicycle from the house to the nearby train station before catching the commuter train to the office in Tokyo. There are bicycle parks all over the train stations. Often a task to remember where one has parked the bicycle if you come back after dark. Wonder how many bicycles are left as "lost" and "unclaimed" over the years. Bicycle thieves will be severely punished, so do not try to get a free ride.

HONSHU - Mountainviews and green water far below!

by Pixiekatten

After enjoying 3 fantastic days in Nikko I hopped on a train taking me to Utsunomiya where I got on the Shinkansen south to Nagoya. There I swapped trains again to a JR train whisking me back up north to Takayama. This sleepy little mountaintown is a highly recommended place, specially after a hectic visit to Tokyo. But for more tips on Takayama, pls see my seperated tip. What this tip is about is actually the trainride there! The trip halfway across the rocky Honshu peninsula. It was almost worth the trip in itself. Amazing views. A scenary reminding you of The Lord Of The Rings movies. A landscape not to be missed! During the two days I spent in Takayama I was looking forward to get to see that scenary again. It was dreamy. Magnificent.

Pink Cars - Women only

by Pixiekatten

For any female solo traveller being slightly worried about "Chikans" I could advice you to ride the pink cars - women only - during rush hours. Of course this is not a quarantee that nothing will happen. But on the other hand, riding normal cars can be just as safe. Its all about being at the wrong place at the wrong time. But today several train companies have introduced the pink cars as a way to try and protect women and girls. Its hard to say if its working since numbers of assault on trains have gone up. There are signs on the platforms in both Japanese and English to indicate where to board these cars. Signs also say during what hours the cars are women only.
