Japan Rail Pass & Train Travel

by SurfaceTravel

Take time to learn about the Japan Rail Pass. It's all on the web site, so I won't copy it all here. Some of the most important points:- You must purchase them from outside of Japan before you arrive.- Upon arrival you have to get it validated. You can do this easily at Narita or at any major station.- If you are going from Tokyo to Kyoto and back, the price is almost the same, so you may as well get a pass, as they are easy to use.- The pass is not good for some local railway lines.- There are passes for 1 or 2 weeks, and covering the different main islands of Japan.- The pass is not valid for the Nozomi super-express between Tokyo and Kyoto.- You must go through a manned gate when using the pass, not an automatic one.- You can show up for a train and get on a "non-reserved" car, clearly marked, or you can reserve a seat a few days, hours, or minutes in advance at a Reservation Office...

Bullet Train and Non-Bullet Train

by SLLiew

Consider buying a JR (Japan Rail) Pass if you are travelling around Japan for a week or more. You cover the cost of a JR one week pass if you just use it for round trip between Tokyo and Kyoto.Your JR pass will not cover all train lines especially the smaller train lines but it is value for money if you are moving from Tokyo to Fukuoka like I did.Note that trains are very punctual. Be at the right platform because the door will open and close quickly when the train arrives at the station. I missed the train once or twice. The trains are efficient, clean and spartan. You can bring food and drinks on the train. Of course, everything is announced in Japanese and knowing the character of the places where you are going helps.

Local train

by turnip2000

If you fly into Osaka, I would suggest taking a local train. It takes several hours, but you get to see lots of Japanese coming home from work and you get a good feel for how hectic life is here. Additionally, you can save a few bucks.

www.ekikara.co.jp is an excellent site if you want to map out specific train timetables between two points, even if they require transferring trains at some point. It is only in Japanese unfortunately.

TAKE THE TRAIN!

by GlobalParty33

TAKE THE TRAIN! i don't care where you're going. i don't care if it's across the island, or across town, just take the train. flying will cost you and you WON'T be on time. and cabs will simply drain your wallet. For example, I live 30 minutes from Yokohama by car. The train costs 260 yen. a cab from my place to the train station (roughly 2 miles) is 600 yen. rediculous is the word.

Beautiful bullet trains

by albaaust

Buy a JR Rail Pass in your home country-it will save you lots of money and you can use it very easily and quickly to travel most places in Japan.Use this page to find out information on the trains.http://www.hyperdia.com/The subway systems are also reasonably easy to navigate.

Buy a rail pass before you leave home.

by jekalene

The trains are a fabulous way to travel in Japan. I went all around Japan except for the north Island due to an earthquake. I paid nothing more for fares and caught the fast train everywhere. I got off whereever it looked nice and stayed for a while. I had no trouble finding reasonably priced accommodation near the train stations.

Is the JR pass right for you?

by CO-Chad

Everyone raves about the Japan Rail Pass, and if you plan to travel a lot within the country, it can be a wonderful bargain. But, if you plan to spend a significant amount of time in one region (say, greater Tokyo or Kansai), it might not be your best bet.A seven day pass runs 28,300 yen (about US$260). Travel by JR trains (including the famous Shinkansen bullet train) from Narita airport to Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, and back to Narita will run about 35,000 yen, a savings of nearly 7,000 yen. If you travel more you save even more. But for me that would be a lot of distance to cover in seven consecutive days.On the other hand, travel from Kansai airport to Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto, Nara, and back to the airport (which are all close and don't entail Shinkansen travel) could run as little as 5,000 yen on JR and independent lines, making that 28,300 yen pass not such a bargain. You can use the link to...

From one volcanic archipelago to another!

by worldkiwi

Air New Zealand links a South Pacific volcanic archipelago with a North Pacific one. There are regular flights between Auckland and Tokyo and Osaka. A service also operates to/from Christchurch. In 2006 I flew Air New Zealand long-haul for the first time in a long while. I was really impressed with the cabin service and food on both the flight to Tokyo and the return flight from Osaka. Air New Zealand's new Boeing 777s are equipped with in-seat entertainment systems in all classes.

The world's best cabin service.

by worldkiwi

From 2003-2005 Malaysia Airlines was awarded the title of world's best cabin service. They fly to Narita (Tokyo), Osaka, Fukuoka, and Nagoya airports from Kuala Lumpur with handy transfers to other major cities around the globe. I had one of the best flights ever in 2005 when I flew to Tokyo from Kuala Lumpur with Malaysia Airlines.
