Easy Website for Navigating trains!!

by squidly2

Here is the most useful website I used when getting around Japan by train. Simply type in where you are leaving from, where you are going to, and what time you would like to depart or arrive. It calculates the route for you. It sorts it by easiest, fastest and cheapest. And if you gaijin (like me!!) can't read the Kanji there is a link for English on the left hand side.

Ferries in Japan

by salisbury3933

Although Japan has an extensive and excellent train system, as an island country there are also plenty of ferries plying their trade between the islands.Shikoku and Kyushu in particular have a lot of ferries headed between both islands, and both islands also have plenty of services going to Honshu. Some are overnight too, which is handy if you are travelling on a budget, as it means you don't need to shell out for accommodation.

The Shinkansen - High Speed Train

by dlandt

The bullet train is a quick and pretty affordable way to get around Japan. It is faster and more comfortable than flying, and relatively cheap. You can choose to ride in coach, with open seating, or pay a bit more and ride in the next class up, with reserved seats. There isn't really just one line. We took the Nozomi line (they are named with Japanese girls' names) and it ran more or less express from Kyoto to Tokyo though its full runis much more extensive. I think we made one or possibly two stops, but still made the trip in a little more than two hours. Other lines make more stops but I don't profess to understand the system completely. As you can see in the photos, seating looks a lot like in an airplane, but it is far more comfortable and you don't have to be there an hour before, plus you bring your luggage so you don't have to check it etc. I think tickets from Kyoto to Tokyo were...

To and from NZ

by salisbury3933

I am from NZ, and lived in Japan 4 years, and recently visited Japan again to see my wife's parents. There are of course direct flights between NZ and Japan, but I have never taken one.I prefer to go via a new destination and see somewhere new. In the past I have gone via Malaysia, Korea and Singapore with stopovers. In the future, Bali, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Taiwan appeal as stopover destinations between the two countries as there are direct flights from NZ and connecting flights to Japan.

The Shinkansen

by salisbury3933

Train is a great way to get around Japan, especially if you purchase a JR railpass prior to entering the country. Those of us who were living in Japan had to pay the same prices as the locals, and train travel is not cheap, but it gets you where you need to go quickly, and in comfort.

Tokyo Subway

by kop-queen

It's pretty scary when you don't speak and can't read the language but once you've cracked the system it must be one of the best transportation systems in the world. A kindly soul (from Melbourne, Australia) spotted our predicament and came to our rescue as we stared helplessly at the chart on the wall. You have to identify the station you are going to and from that the price band of the ticket needed. You then select that amount on the ticket machine. However all is not lost if you get it wrong as you can pay any extra at the exit gate of your destination station. You can also buy passes of varying values which are useful but watch out as there are man different train companies and the pass may not cover them all.It is also true that they employ people to push travellers onto the train! By the time we reached Yokohama we were cheek to cheek with fellow travellers. It must be scary for...

Lufthansa Airlines

by kop-queen

We flew Lufthansa from Manchester UK to Tokyo, Narita via Frankfurt. Despite leaving Manchester 2 hours late due to fog we arrived on time in Japan. The food was pretty good for airline meals and the sweet and sour salmon on our return journey was my personal favourite. Sadly there were problems with headphone sockets not working on the return flightand it was a very long flight not to have the diversion of a few films to watch.I cannot be complimentary about the check-in procedure at Narita on our return. It is the first time I have ever needed the full 3 hours between check in and flight times. The queuing was horrendous at every stage.

Unlimited Train Ride Around Japan

by traveldream

If you're going to travel to many cities within Japan and use train a lot, it will be financially wise to use a JR Pass, an unlimited pass released by Japan Railway (JR) Group. Japan's transportation is expensive, especially if you use it a lot. Even my Japanese friends say the JR Pass makes train travels cheap (but they are not eligible to use it).I travelled from Tokyo to Fuji Five Lakes area using a JR Pass. From Kanto area (East), I went far west to Kansai area. Having a JR Pass I can use the super-express line (Shinkansen) to save travel time, and I booked a seat on the train's non-smoking car for the long ride--all without any additional charge. I stayed in Osaka but took day trips to Kyoto; with a JR Pass I can save travel time by using Shinkansen almost everyday! I used my JR Pass to go many places, take a day trip to Nara, and so on. Moving on to Nagoya, I took Shinkansen...

For really cheap flights to Tokyo from Kuala Lumpur, wait for the Malaysia Airlines Travel Fair or the Matta Fair which happens in March every year. You can either visit these fairs in person or call the participating travel agents who can book tickets with the same rates. We got our ticket to Tokyo for US$289 per person nett including all taxes!

Japan Railway Pass

by Restless-in-kl

Japan has one of the most comprehensive railway network in the world. It's really convenient to go from one place to another with a Japan Railway Pass (JR Pass) which can be used on all trains on JR lines (except Nozumi train).Get your JR pass from your home country as it's much cheaper than getting in Japan. In Kuala Lumpur, you can find it at- JAL travel service in AMODA bulding, Jalan Imbi (US$260 for a 7-day pass you get on the spot). Voucher form is provided- JAL branch office in Plaza Mont Kiara (US$266 for same pass, but need 1 day to issue)Once you reach Narita airport, go to Basement 1 of Terminal 2 to exchange the voucher for a JR Pass. Must keep this pass with you at all times. If you lose it, you will need to buy again. You will need to go to Tokyo Station if you want to continue your journey to Kyoto. It takes 51 mins.Plan your train journey ahead of time, so that you can...
