Kansai airport in Osaka. One...

by j-san

Kansai airport in Osaka. One of my favorite airports and the fastest to get through customs and immigration. The only complaint I have is that the Kansai Airport Haruka, the express train connecting the airport to Kyoto, runs about every 45minutes or so. It's very inconvenient if you just happened to miss one.

A day trip into Tokyo from Narita Airport

by vyxxyn

If you have a few hours to spare when connecting flights at the Tokyo Narita Airport, you may visit Tokyo if you have more than 6 hours to spare. Get a timetable from the station staff as you will need it to plan your route back. Timetable/maps in English are available.Best mode of transport is the JR train. From the airport, get to the basement and purchase a one-way ticket from the travel center. Cost is about 2,000 Yen. Take the "SKYLINER" train to the end of the route to a place called "Ueno", where there is alot of shopping and sightseeing to do. You do not have to change lines. Ueno is a good enough destination. Your return ticket can be purchased from Ueno Station. Please note dining is VERY EXPENSIVE in Tokyo, therefore it might be best to grab a bite on the go in the basement of shopping mall "Matsuzakaya". You'll be spoilt for choice!Train ride per direction is about 90-120...

Subways and Trains

by FOURPIRSQ

Get a map, lots of change, and go. Most trips cost 120 yen. This is the most reliable public transportation in the world. We also used the local buses and we used the JR trains for longer trips. We purchased a JR pass before we left the states.

It's never been easier

by Snowzy

The one thing that I find it's an absolute must to have when travelling in Japan is the Japan rail pass (JR pass). Of course, if you are only travelling within a city (eg. tokyo only) than, it is not necessary to buy a JR pass, but if you are thinking of travelling to more than one city (eg. from tokyo to kyoto) than JR pass offers excellent value and give you the convenience for travelling in Japan.JR Pass can only be bought outside of Japan. So before you depart for Japan, buy the pass at the authorised agency in you hometown. Once you reach Japan, just go to any of the JR station to activate your pass.JR pass allows you to travel on all JR operated trains, buses and ferries free. Reservation is a must on certain trains espcially the Shinkansen (bullet train) and the good news is, reservation is free. However, JR pass is not allowed for the trains of the Nozomi series. Well, this not...

The subway, oh my so many trains!

by cvilla007

When you come to Japan, you will take a train at some point. Trains are everywhere. And trains turn into subways in the city. Most every train/subway map is written in kanji. But in the cities you'll get some romaji or English translations. You might even here English on a loudspeaker. The trains are simply amazing here. You can take a train anywhere. That's the beauty of Japan.

High speed adventure

by Assenczo

This is supposed to be a deal. A pass for 10 days unlimited travel on all speed trains exept for the Nozomi - $250. Concidering that even the subway price changes (up) every two stops or so this must be a great deal. I enjoyed it very much. It allowed my to stay in Atami - seaside resort - and travel to Tokyo, do sightseeing and shopping. Himeji was also granted a visit due to this wonder of travel. Nonetheless, I have to say that the Spanish AVE drives smother and faster (or at least it feels like that).

Kyoto Station

by mad4travel

Kyoto station is quite something. As well as having dozens of platforms and hundreds of trains arriving it also hosts an 11 floor department store, dozens of shops and restaurants ( all of good quality), a hotel, a bakery (one of my favourite places!) and an amazing view from the top floor of the city of Kyoto. The architecture is very futuristic and amazing. It can be a little complicated finding your way out as its so big, but thats half the fun!

Ride the Bullet train

by mad4travel

The bullet train or Shinkansen-a beautiful thing to behold! It runs on time. You stand on a mark on the platform and the train door will materialise right infront of you.The trip is like being on an aircraft (without the bumpy bits). Its frighteningly fast, very smooth, awfully relaxing. It has airline style seats and refreshments come round at regular intervals. The train crew have airline style uniforms and will doff their caps and bow everythime they enter and exit the carraige. Even the cleaning ladies bow to the train as it pulls in the station! You sure would'nt get that in England!Cheapest way to travel is with a Japan rail pass. (Bought outside Japan) You can reserve a set (advisable) but there are unreserved sections. If the train is a double decker go for the upper deck (rows 12 and over) otherwise you get an unexciting view of a concrete wall for much of the trip!
