JR Train to World Expo from Nagoya

by ClareyD

If you are hoping to go to the World Expo in Aichi in 2005 and you have a Japan Rail Pass then the majority of the cost is included. When we went in March we had to pay a supplement of 380 Yen each for the Aichi Loop Line section and you can pay as you get off at the ticket barrier. It is well organised, from Nagoya it is well signposted and there was even a guy holding a placard in the middle of the station. The train makes a few stops along the way and takes about 50 mins each way. When you get to the Expo station I would recommend heading for the Limo Maglev train that takes you to the main expo area. We made the mistake of heading for the bus as there was no queue, but that's because it goes to the much smaller Seto area. Cost for the Bus was 160 YenThere are coin lockers at Nagoya station and though we found the main ones were full there were signposts to some further lockers by the...

Japan Rail Pass

by natashac

If you're planning to do some serious travel around Japan (ie not just Tokyo and Kyoto), definitely get a Japan Rail Pass. Yes they are expensive, but they are fabulous. Add up the cost of a few shinkansen (bullet train) trips and you will see it is well worth it. JR passes are not available to Japanese people and they are very jealous of us gaijin, because the shinkansen is very expensive for them. Your first shinkansen trip will be a fab experience! You feel the speed the first time, then after that you hardly notice it.JR passes are valid on nearly all trains in Japan - only excluding the subways and a few private lines.

KEEP YOUR LANE!!!!

by manuelEB

Don't get distracted by the beauty of sunsets. You are driving in a Japanese highway and even when the speed limit is heavily enforced (100 km/h in the fastest sections *smile*), ALL the automotors -- 5-10 ton trucks included-- run at that speed. Keep your lane, use your back mirror, fasten your belt, pay your taxes, brush your teeth, etc, etc...Higways are going to be expensive. Stop whining. And yes... In Japan we drive on the wrong side. All those psycotics driving against the "normal direction" (your direction!!!) have the law on their side... (-;

Efficient Japan Rail.

by A2002

Best bet for me is to buy a Japan rail pass for 7 days since I am going to Kyoto from Narita. The rail pass cost 28,300 yen. The return trip from the airport to Kyoto cost about 26,000 yen. Furthermore, I can make short trips using the rail pass. I used the railpass to travel around Tokyo too, so save money on the subway. There are many rail lines, majority operated by JR and some by private railways. The JR railpass is only valid on JR trains. The website gives you the list of the railway in Japan indicating which are the JR ones. Apart from the 7 or 14 days JR pass, which is valid throughout Japan, there are also JR East and JR West pass (cheaper than JR pass). There's also a Fuji area pass for the private railways, steamers, and cable car in the Fuji area.Dun miss a ride on the SHINKANSEN !

Going to Korea

by salisbury3933

Getting to Korea is pretty easy these days, as just about every city of a reasonable size will have flights to Seoul. Bigger cities also have flights to Busan,Daegu and Jeju island.Asiana offers flights between places like Matsuyama, Takamatsu, Kumamoto, Miyazaki, Sendai and Seoul, as well as the bigger centres.JAL, ANA and Korean also have many flights between the big cities and Seoul/Busan.If your final destination in Japan is a regional area, it may be worthwhile looking at Asiana or Korean Air, and transferring in Seoul.

JR Pass - Yes or No?

by unaS

The JR pass is not usable on the Nozomi, the fastest of the 3 shinkansen, nor the private train lines.A JR Pass covers many fares but not all but, of course you can also pay for them with cash. You might also use non-JR services: between the airport and your hotel in Tokyo;: for trips in Tokyo, for example a trip via Tokyo Metro / Toei subway line(s);: for a trip in Hiroshima via Hiroden street car line(s);: for trips in Kyoto via Kyoto City municipal subway line(s). See:http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2361.htmlhttp://www.japanrailpass.net/eng/en004.htmlhttp://www.japanrailpass.net/eng/en008.htmlI personally never used the Green (first class) trains, but saw many of them while waiting for a regular shinkansen. Except for the addition of a table at each seat I didn't see any real difference. The real difference is in the amount of time taken to arrive at the destination. If an extra 1/2...

Using hyperdia.com

by dru46

Hyperdia is the best system for getting around Japan. Learning to use it properly is very important. Here are just a few tips on how to use it effectively and efficiently.1. Route SearchEntering the name of a station is difficult if you don't know the spelling. Japanese station names generally don't have rules on spelling. Spaces and hyphens tend to be interchangeable so be aware. Also note that "N" is sometimes converted into an "M" such as Shinbashi and Shimbashi. They are the same. Departure and arrival times are very important. Be sure to check more than one time if you are flexible.2. Search ParametersHyperdia tends to be JR biased. This is usually fine, but be aware that you may not want to take the Shinkanaen or the JR lines.3. Search ResultsThe first route is not always the best route. Check all of the route options to ensure you get the route you want. Sometimes a route is...
