Fast and Efficient Shinkansen (bullet train)

by Phalaenopsis03

Any foreign traveler to Japan must purchase a JR Pass if they're expecting to traverse a good portion of the country on a short amount of time. The JR Pass is good for use on the JR Group Railways, which include the shinkansen or “bullet trains”(except Nozomi) and local JR trains, as well as JR buses, and the JR ferry to Miyajima. Passes can be purchased for 7, 14, or 21-day travel, regular seats or Green seats (superior class seats). I purchased my 14-day pass for 45100 yen or $468 at JTB Travel inside the Mitsuwa Japanese Marketplace in Torrance, CA. And I must say, it was the best decision I made and definitely took advantage of it. Below are a sampling of my trips and use of the JR Pass during my 13 days in Japan.Kyoto to Hiroshima = 192 miles one way, 2 hrs. exactlyKyoto to Tokyo = 296 miles one way, 2 hrs. and 45 minutesTokyo to Hachinohe = 368 miles one way, 3 hrs.The shinkansens...

Green Car

by salisbury3933

Want to travel in a bit more comfort? Green Car seats are bigger, and more comfortable than normal seats. That's about it really. It's not something I would do all the time, but for a longer train trip, the extra comfort may be worth it.

Taxi

by boltonian

Very expensive.Start at between 670 and 780 Yen for first 2 KM, then rapid rises afterwards. A 3km journey would be approx 2000 Yen.Just walk or use the train. Many drivers wear ties or even bow tie and suit

Subway

by boltonian

All major cities have a complex set of metro lines which compliment the overland rail.Metro is not part of JR, so tickets must be purchased from machines in the station. If you need to change lines, you may need a transfer ticket as lines are owned by different companies. If unsure, buy the cheapest ticket then before exiting you can put it into the fare adjustment machine and it will tell you what you have to pay. With so many lines, it can be daunting, but look at the maps and get on. The metro has English announcements.Just be careful that you use a local service as opposed to the rapid if you need a minor station or you may fly right by.Subway stations are often huge affairs with a rail station and shopping complex included. If you are using the subway to find somewhere, try to find out which exit you need. Some stations have up to 10 exits and these may be up to 1 mile apart.All...

The Train

by boltonian

Japan is the ultimate for the train spotter, or anyone wanting to get from A to B on time. Japan has a main rail company called JR but also many other smaller companies who run more local services. JR run over 20,000 trains every day and 99.9% run on time. It is facinating to watch the drivers (you can see through the front window in many car 1 trains) point at each station they pass to the very second they were due.At the station, there is a row of ticket machines. You look at the map (in English) and it tells you what to pay. Easy. Also, for intercity journeys, the ticket office is very helpful for bookings and seat reservations. For overseas visitors, the JR pass is a must. Prices at 28000 Yen for 7 days (14 and 21 also available), you can travel on any JR service. If you plan to go to Kyoto from Tokyo and back, you have already saved money. You can make reservations at the station, or...

Japan Rail Pass

by chibi_fr

If you go on your own, the Japan Rail Pass will be more than usefull !! First advantage: unlimited use of the Shinkansen (japanese TGV) for any destination !Second advantage: unlimited use for the Yamanote line which is a line going around main places in Tokyo and therefore you will save money no to use the other lines !!More details on the website

JR Rail Pass

by lucaya

The Japanese rail/metro system is quite confusing! There are two different rail lines, each with a different set of tickets, the public lines and a series of private lines from the "JR" company. However, if you are travelling there from the United States, (I'm not sure about the requirements for other countries), you can purchase a JR Rail Pass while still in your home country about three months before your trip. You can only purchase it while still outside of Japan, however you can only redeem it for the true pass once you get into Japan. It is expensive, however it covers all the bullet trains, which can become a life-saver if you intend to do extensive travelling throughout the islands.

Japan

Get the Japan Railway pass. It is only available outside Japan, but very good value for money. A pass which will give you 7 days unlimited use of rail in all of Japan (including most of the Shinkanzen and the urban rail lines) will set you back about 200$. This is the equivalent to one one way ticket Osaka - Tokyo when bought inside Japan (I think).

by joiwatani

Checking the fare mapWhen purchasing a ticket, first check the fare table found at the ticket vending machines. The red round mark indicates the station you are in. The child's fare (6-11 years old) is half of the adult's fare.Up to two children aged 0 to 5 years old can ride free when accompanied by a paying passenger. If you have difficulty determining the fare, always inquire with a station attendant. These guys are usually in uniform. They look like police officers or security officers.
