How to ride a subway, Lesson 101

by joiwatani

Finding a subway entranceThere are three different train systems that serve central Tokyo: subways, Japan Railways (JR), and private railways. Of the three , the subway is the fastest and easiest way to get around the city center. There are 12 subway lines in Tokyo: four are Toei subway lines and eight are Tokyo Metro lines. Remembering the name and designated color of the line you wish to ride will help you find it, as every station entrance of the subway system displays its own station code mark. Station CodeStation Codes combine a letter indicating the line and a number indicating the station. Using these codes makes it easy to find your destination. The station numbers of each line at the left or bottom of the route map. Station codes are used on route maps and platform station signs.

Using A Taxi To Get Around

by syrin

Taxis are really expensive here. The only reason to use a taxi is if you are pressed for time, like at the end of the day when you want to see a site before it closes, this is the time unless your in Tokyo and your destination is all the way across town, then you want to use the train or subway as it will be quicker. Taxis helped in Kyoto when I was there. The bus can take and hour or more to get to the other end of town so we opted for a taxi because we only had a little time to go see the golden palace. Its also much more comfortable. Kobe was also a good place to take a taxi and it does come in handy when you do not want to get lost. The restaurant we ate at was not far from our hotel however we did not know how to get there and it was in some alley off the main street. Even the taxi cab driver had problems finding it at first so if it wasn't for him we would have never ate Kobe Beef....

Rail Pass Will Save You Huge Money

by syrin

We purchased a rail pass. This is a must if you plan to go to many different places or even go on a day trip to another city. A round trip train pass from Hiroshima to Kobe can cost you $100pp easily depending on how fast you want to get there. Don't think that just because your on the train you can go as far as you want. When you purchase a single ticket for one use its only as good as your destination. If you decide to go further you will have to pay more before exiting. There is more of a hastle purchasing the one use ticket. First off if you do not understand Japanese its really confusing making the rail pass user friendly as the only thing you have to do is show and go. The rail pass costs around $280 US dollars per person for adult and around $141 US for a child for a week and includes any train, (excluding the fastest bullet train) Ferry, bus or subway operated by Jr Lines. Most...

Ways To Save On Transportation Using The Bus

by syrin

Ways to save on transportation are to check with the hotel or inn that you are staying at and see if they have a day discount where you pay one set price for unlimited travel on the bus. This can save you money as not only is using the subway or train expensive but the bus going from point A-B can be expensive too. Taxi cabs are definatley expensive here. Sometimes when you book your hotel or inn they price of bus fair in that particular area is already included. If you email them or call them up and see if they have any type of bus pass that you can purchase. For one day it cost us $10 in Kyoto and came in handy. Please note that the bus rides can be extremly long depending on how far across town you are traveling as they have many stops. It can also get quite crowded too. Many people have to stand up the whole ride. Your best phrase to know riding the bus is sumi masen which means...

How to travel around Japan?

by Jawnuta

As nomad as we are we have waved good bye to that juicy JR Rail Pass. We have decided to RENT A CAR.We have done timeless research on the Internet and learned that:- One can rent a car in Japan through the well known international companies- One can use TOCOO to rent a car from local Japanese companies, by paying little extra and navigating through cool web site written in perfect English.-or ... One can just simply make a new friends by using hand gestures and rent a car directly from Japanese companies.Of course we have decided on the third option. And if that's not enough we have decided to do it face to face after arriving in Tokyo. There is several companies in Japan that rent cars. There is Nippon Rent-a-car, Toyota Rent-a-car... and few more.

DRIVING in JAPAN - WE MADE IT!!!

by Jawnuta

We spend 24 days in Japan, 17 of which we drove around in our rental Mazda Demio. It was fantastic experience.Driving in Japan is easy since Japan is the most law obeying nation we have every seen on the road. All we had to do was to sing a mantra "Stay to the left" "I am making right turn into the left line" "I am making left turn into the left line" etc. heheheGPS navigation even though it was in Japanese was a life saviour. We were able to better plan our next over night stops. We never got lost (OK once we got lost because we took a wrong turn from the rest stop into the highway that was not in GPS, hehehe). We were able to find quickly a hotel after getting into the town of our choice. Keep in mind we travel with no reservations. We strongly recommend driving in Japan for everybody who drove anywhere else than his own village.

How to get to Japan?

by Jawnuta

After searching through the Internet for flight ticket I came to the conclusion that www.kayak.com gives the best prices of international flights.First of all they give you the final price with tax and all the fees.Second, 'kayak' is easy to navigate, and you see what you are getting. After watching the non-stop ticket prices for JFK-Narita I snatched two of them for about US$1300. Supposedly good price for July.Later on I learned about few other web sites that are good for buying tickets to Japan, however when checking the price of "mine" ticket I found their is more expensive. Those sites are also more complicated to navigate than 'Kayak' and tease you with the price before taxes and fees.....and I do not like that. Here are those sites just on case someone will find them helpful:www.jtbusa.comwww.his-usa.comwww.hittravel.co.jp

HOW TO TAKE A REGULAR BUS

by cheesecake17

Timetables for each of the buses can be found at the bus stops. 1.- Riding the BusWhen waiting at a bus stop, signal to the driver that you wish to ride by raising your hand. They will then stop and let you on. Board the bus from the DOUBLE DOORS IN THE MIDDLE(SOMETIMES ITS IN THE BACK OFF THE BUS)When boarding, take the small ticket that will appear from the machines at the sides of the steps by the doors. This is called a seiri-ken, and will have a number on it that indicates where you boarded. Do not lose or fold this ticket. (In the event that you lose the seiri-ken, you will be charged the most expensive fare shown on the fare board.)When the bus is approaching your destination, signal to the driver that you wish to get off by pressing the button.(LOOK FOR IT ON THE SIDE OR NEXT TO THE WINDOW) When the bus has stopped at the bus stop that you wish to get off at, put the seiri-ken in...

How To Take a Train or Subway in Japan

JAPANESE TRAFFIC GUIDE(click)1. At the station, find a ticket vending machine.2. Look at the large map or chart displayed above the machine and find the name of your destination.3. The price indicated under the name of your destination is the fare to your destination. (In large stations, it's written in English, but if not, go ask someone to tell you the fare.)4. Insert coins or bills in the slots and press the button that indicates your fare.5. If you are taking JR limited express trains (Tokkyu), you are required to pay an additional fare.6. For the Tokkyu ticket, go to a ticket counter and buy your tickets. You can reserve your seat for limited express trains at this time with an additional fee.7. Look at the time table displayed on the wall in the terminal and find the departure time of your train and the platform number where the train departs.8. Go to the gate and hand your ticket...
