SHINKANSEN

by Pixiekatten

Shinkansen - Japan in a nutshell- High Tech - Precision - Respect -Choosing the Shinkansen to get around in Japan is a true experience. In just one trip one get a taste of 'the Japanese Way' - technology, precision and respect. Bullet Trains got a maximum speed of 186mph, something that is to be increased in the next 5 years. 300 trains operate daily and swooshes 130 million passengers around the country. Quite impressive. With the Japanese Rail Pass one never needs to worrying about booking tickets. At least 2-3 carts om each train are for passengers with no seat reservation. Just look at the ground or screens and you'll soon find your seat. On the ground where the trains stops a notice will tell you which cart will stop here - reserved seats or not - smoking or non-smoking. So in Japan one never need to stand around and wonder where one's seat will be. The bullet trains follow same...

Transfer at Narita Airport

by cochinjew

Many flights from the USA to Asia has connections at Narita. You do not go through immigration or customs. if you are changing airlines, then there may be a terminal change..if you are coming in on United and continuing on United no problem at all, but if you are coming in on United and leaving on Northwest, there may be a change of terminals. you will not leave the terminals and usually the connecting flights are within 2 to 3 hours. it is a very easy airport to transit and the workers there are extremely polite and helpful. This last time I transited through Narita, I changed from Northwest from Singapore to American to Dallas and beyond. When i got to Narita, there was a Northwest Employee with my name on a card and she walked me through the security to the bus that leaves for the other terminal ( Terminals 1 and 2), and everything went smoothly.

Highway bus & Night bus

by Pixiekatten

When going to Japan a lot of people have only heard of the JR Pass and seem to think this is always the best option to get around when it comes to saving money. However I have found that when travelling between Tokyo and other major cities the nightbus was a much cheaper option. It was also good in some other ways. One saves the cost for one nights accomodation. One gets more time to see the country since one is travelling at night and arrive rested in the morning ready to explore :) It is best to but tickets in advance. Some routes are very popular. Tickets are often sold at the local trainstation or from where the bus departs. One can easily save 20% - 50% instead of goin by train. For anyone interested in the highway buses this is good site to start:http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2366.htmlA quote from the site: "On major routes, such as the Tokyo - Nagoya - Kyoto - Osaka route, fierce...

Train to Mt Koya - Koyasan

by Pixiekatten

It is very easy to get to Mount Koya from Osaka. The Nankai Electric Railway makes 4 round trips a day by Limited Express, and runs Express trains at about 30-min intervals between Osaka Namba Station and Kôyasan Station. It takes 1 hr 40 min by Limited Express, and around 2 hours by Express. Same goes for getting to Mt Koya from Kyoto - just add another 30min (approx) to you travel time. JR Pass is valid if you take JR Trains to Mt Koya however they cannot be used on the ropeway that takes you up to the mountain itself. There is an excellent website on Koyasan, see below.

Avoid Taxi Trouble

by DeltaShot

Finding an address in Tokyo can be a problem even for taxi drivers, because of the way many small streets are not named and houses are numbered but not necessarily sequentially. If possible, come armed with a map and phone number for your destination. We gave our driver the address of the inn we were going to, in Japanese, but he didn't know where to take us and in the end he phoned the inn and got directions from them.

Discount Bulk train tix: "Tokkyu Yon-mai kippu"

by DSwede

If you do not have a rail pass, student ID or other way to get any standard discount train tickets, you should consider buying bulk tickets. If you purchase a block of four tickets, for any leg of travel, JR will give you a bulk purchase discount. For example, go to the ticket window (“Midorino Madoguchi”) and ask for "Hakata Kokura Tokkyu Yon-mai kippu". This will give you four tickets for the segments between Hakata and Kokura. If you are traveling round trip, with a friend, this gets all your tickets at one time with a ~20% savings.-this tip compliments of personal advise given by other VT'er Masa (gogonicetrip).

Shinkansen

by shoguneye

If you're going to travel throughout Japan I highly recommend a Bullet train pass. They have to be bought outside the country and will end up saving you a lot of cash. Also when booking hotels there is a JTB service which I would recommend as many times I'd show up at hotels and request a room and they were always full. I'd step outside and phone the JTB and they would be able to book the same hotel no problem.

To bear in mind before traveling to Japan...

by tzuki

This is something to bear in mind before traveling to Japan, because is one of the best bargains! It is available to foreign tourists (but not for foreign residents of Japan). The pass lets you use any JR service for 7 days for Y28,300, 14 days for Y45,100 or 21 days for Y57,700. The pass cannot use with the new brand train NOZOMI but there are other Shinkasen trains. In other to get this JR pass, you need to apply an “exchange order” outside Japan at JAL offices or major travel agencies. Once you arrive in Japan, and you want to validate this pass, you need to go to a JR office (in the airports, train stations or Tourist Information Centers) with this exchange order (that you have previously paid in your country) plus your valid passport. The JR pass can only be used by a temporary visitor visa, and it start whenever you validate it.For further information about it, please, check:...

the train and metro are a miracle

by pawimzelf

I did a travel with the bullittrain, is a fast train, one of the first in the world.I traveled from Osaka to Tokyo with this train it is a distance from appr. 500km. It takes, in that time that I was there, 3 hours. But I heard that they where busy to make a train for 500km/H ????? 1 HOUR (eheh) What was also suprised to me was the dissiplined way of the people, they standing in line on the platforms, nobody will try to go first, everyone is waiting his turn to step in??????The same in the big citys with the metro, also the train/metro stops exact at the same spot.?????We in Holland can learn a lot of them.......
