Driving on the roads can be easy

by SLLiew

In Japan, you drive on the right hand side of the road. Japanese drivers are polite. At night while stopping at traffic intersection, some even dimmed their headlights to avoid shining too brightfully to the opposite drivers. At certain time of the day, certain day of the week and on certain stretches of the roads of Japan, driving can be a breeze with no traffic jams and lots of beautiful scenery to take in.Avoid getting into road jams during the end of Sunday weekend for traffic returning to Tokyo. Avoid the Golden Week where all the roads can be clogged and it is better to stay home or walk in a nearby park or a visit a museum than trying to drive round Japan. Also enjoyed been driven around at the night in Tokyo with the network of underground roads under the city.Only drawback the maps and signs are in Japanese except for a few major bilingual signs.

Shinkansen the best way to see the country fast

by Samarkand-74

As we bought the voucher for JR Rail Pass before we left Sweden we had planned that Shinkanse would take us around the country. On place we just had go to a JR office and book our seat reservations and then we could go around as much as we liked. You can choose if you will book any seat reservations or not, it does not cost anything as long as you have the JR Rail pass. It was very convinient getting transported from place to place by the Bullettrain. Mostly we went with the Hikaritrains but sometimes with the Kodama train (which stops at somewhat more stations.)Most of the times the train left on time but it happens twice that the train was not in time to the stations where we waited. One of the times a helicopter had crashed on the tracks in Osaka so we had to wait some time before the trains were able to pass by that place..More info will be added shortly

Tokyo subway and JR lines

by beckbre

While initially daunting, getting around Tokyo by subway is actually very well organized and logical. Once you try it - you'll be able to make your way anywhere. First of all, you will need a very good bilingual map of the subway system. I recommend the ones published by Kodansha, either the city map or book atlas. Most stations have romaji (roman) character signs, but the bilingual maps help for those stations that only have kanji character signs.Once in the station, look for the big system map. This is usually huge, obvious, and up high on the wall. Find the station name where you wish to go. There will be a price under the station name. This is the price of your ticket.Under the map will be a bank of touch screen machines. Select the amount of your ticket on the screen and insert your money. Your ticket and change will eject. Insert your ticket (arrow down) into the slot on the...

Buying Japan Rail Pass

by jake44111

When you buy your rail pass, you have many options. There are several private travel agencies that sell the pass, but I shopped around and found that Kinetsu offers the best exchange rate. For some reason, the others seemed to have a bad exchange rate that caused the price to sky rocket. I bought mine online at http://www.kintetsu.com/jrpass/index.php and had it within a few days. Not there is a $12 shipping charge because they use FedEx. Have fun!

This is a very useful season ticket, if you would like to get around Japan by train. I think it is like 10000 Yen, with 5 coupons, and you can use it yourself for 5 days, or share it with friends. No need to use 5 days after each other. This ticket will be stamped each day, when you use it, and there is no limitation, so valid for 24 hours, well actually not for all the trains, but the locals, and the limited express I think. It is on sale at JR rail stations during school holidays. Usual availability (subject to change): Period Valid On Sale Spring March 1 to April 10 February 20 to March 31 Summer July 20 to September 10 July 1 to August 31 Winter December 10 to January 20 December 1 to January 10 You can even get to Hokkaido from Osaka, or get around in Kyushu island for example, well not that quickly. It is a good choice, because no need to buy in advance, you can buy it before you...

JR Pass

by hanbert

heard many praises about JR pass, but will like to warn of many serious short-comings, most JR reservation offices have very little idea about the pass, esp. for the night train. We planned to travel from Tokyo to Sapporo on night train to save both time and money, but at Shinjuku reservation office, the guys insisted that JR Pass cannot take night train even we explain that we are not asking for a sleeping compartment. The answer given - "no english, japaness only" and refuse to talk anymore... luckily, we met two japaness ladies that migrated to US and speak good English, we ask for their help and with some exchanges in their local language, we managed to do the reservation all the way to Sapporo on night train !!!Coming back from Hakodate is the same problem, but now that we anticipate the problem, we book few days in advanced. true enough, we encoutered same problem and we had to...

Japan Rail

by flynboxes

By far the best and most economical way to get around Japan is to buy a Japan Rail Pass in your home country. It cost me $250 when I was there but if I had bought the tickets when I was there it would have cost me $1,000...I got my money's worth to say the least. At the time I bought it you were not allowed to use the pass on the newer maglev trains but that may have changed

Rail Pass

by cloed

Anybody going to Japan should get a rail pass, as the transport in Japan is expensive and with the size of the country everywhere is a long way off. you can get a 7/14/21 day pass and as long as you do even the smallest amount of travel it will pay for its self. You buy your voucher in your home contry and when you arrive in Japan you go to a train station and its exchanged for your ticket, you will need to have your passport with you when you travel as they say they check the ticket against the passport but saying that mine was never checked.there are some terms and conditions but nothing that would put you off gettion one and you will get the trill of riding the "bullet or Shinkansen train.
