Awashima-jinja is an obscure shrine known for its annual hinanagashi festival on March 3rd, where donated ningyo (dolls) are set into the sea on boats. But even on regular occasions, it is a great place to visit just to ogle at the collection of dolls, figurines and idols that have been collected over the years. The collection is sorted by type, e.g. zodiac animals, kitsune (foxes) and wedding dolls. There are even collections of Buddha statues (despite it being a Shinto shrine) and Victorian-era European china dolls!
