Things to Do

Adventure World Shirahama

Adventure World Shirahama, Shirahama

Circle88 Says:  This mixture of zoo and theme park is a great place to have fun especially if you have kids. There is a safari you can take that is worth while but ofcourse not like a real one. There is also a rollercoaster and some other more minor rides for children.

Adventure World

Adventure World, Shirahama

kevarms Says:  It's divided into 4 sections:Marine World: with seals, penguins, performing dolphin and killer whale. Highlight for me was the awesome polar bear. Safari World: take a bus ride and check out the scary lions and tigers. It's even possible to rent a bike but this is limited to...

nathasha Says:  ...while u are embracing each other....i would not recommend to go to a place like shirahama without someone to hold ur hand and kiss u on moments like this!!! even if its just ur favourite teddy bear, or kitty-chan ;))

nathasha Says:  .....find a nice barbecue spot with ur honey and have nice evening picnic admiring the setting sun :)) ur belly will be screaming for food after biking those hilly roads!!!

day on the beach :)), Shirahama

nathasha Says:  the shirahama village is a charmingly small resort, with a population of less than 20 000 people :)) almost everything is centered around the little main road, which runs right by the beach, and yes the beach is wonderful!!! just u might not be able to spot it if you go in...

mountain biking!!!

mountain biking!!!, Shirahama

nathasha Says:  the peninsula is best explored by foot or by bike :)) biking around gives you a chance to see more and enjoy all the nature and everything more deeply than just by driving around with the car. you can move easily in the traffic and explore more inaccessible places like this...

the shirahama peninsula :))

the shirahama peninsula :)), Shirahama

nathasha Says:  shirahama is a popular hot spring resort u should not miss!! if u don`t like the crowd though, avoid national holidays like obon and golden week, as its gonna be packed!!!its a lovely small peninsula in central japan, wakayama prefecture. there are great nature spots, and...

onsen - hot springs...aaahhh!!! :))

onsen - hot springs...aaahhh!!! :)), Shirahama

nathasha Says:  yes, you have come here to bathe :)) there are several places to experience authentic japanese hot spring; try shirara-yu, murono-yu or sakino-yu. the onsen is not expensive, in case you do it publicly where men and women bathe separately. its only if you want to have the...

shirahama hanabi!!!

i thought it would be romantic to take a walk on the beach after dark, finally it would be empty of people...i could have not been more wrong!!! day or night in the summer, the beach is likely to be full of people!! in the evening families, couples and groups of teenagers gather on the beach to shoot fire works, the popular japanese summer activity :)) so u have no other choice than to go to the nearest "konbini" and get urself some to shoot!!!
if u wanna see something like in this pic, there are big fireworks arranged by the community, usually during obon august or end of july, check the tourist info for details.

Dress Code: anything u like, however why not try the japanese summer kimono "yukata"

you can rent bikes at the shirahama train station, where you can also leave ur backpack etc if you are carrying one. a mountain bike costs 2000 yen, a normal bike a little less. anyways its well worth the money and much more adventurous than going around in a car or a bus. we really loved biking around the peninsula, its perfectly sized for a day or two of biking!!!

Warnings and Dangers

take care shooting the fire works!

the fire works are beautiful, but remember to be careful shooting them...best would be to shoot from a spot distant enough from other people, direct the sticks toward the ocean and wear protective goggles....however u will see nobody doing that!!! so be careful walking around in that chaotic mess of fire flowers!!!

Tourist Traps

boycott the adventure world....

....for the sake of the animals!!! of course a resort is not complete without an amusement park, and it might seem appealing to see the show of the killer whales, cute pandas or have a swim with dolphins, but before you do, think of the poor animals in captivity!!! for example, of all the 178 killer whales captured to the marine parks of the world, only 47 are still living to serve their "life sentence". so please take a second thought and do something adventorous in the wild nature surrounding you!!!

Unique Suggestions: to learn more about the subject: please have a look at this great website with very accurate information: http://www.orcaskillerbeauties.com/orcas_en.htm

Fun Alternatives: please do something to save & protect these majestic animals, instead of contributing to support their life in miserable captivity....
