Wakayama Castle Gate

Wakayama Castle was originally constructed in in the 16th century, but it was destroyed in WWII, so the current castle was built in 1954. It was one of the Tokugawa castles. Yorinobu Tokugawa was dispatched here and developed the castle further, along with the surrounding city.

Inside the castle there are many artifacts from the Edo Period including many from the Tokugawa shogunate. Of the castles I've visited so far, Wakayama Castle's museum is definitely one of the best. Even if you're not a fan of reconstructed castles, it is worth it to see the artifacts.

The castle grounds are free, but entrance to the castle is 400 yen.

Kimii-dera

Kimii-dera is the second temple of the Saigoku 33 Kannon Temple Pilgrimage. It's probably the most famous temple in the city. It was originally built by a monk from China's Tang Dynasty in 770. The original buildings do not remain, but historic structures include gate built in 1509 and the pagoda built in 1449.

The temple is built on the side of a small mountain, so you have to ascend 231 stairs before reaching it. The grounds contain some monuments and statues in addition to the temple structures and the Reihodo features a large golden statue of Kannon. You cannot take pictures inside but if you go up the stairs to the viewing area you can take pictures through the glass. It offers a better view of the face from the top and also provides you with an excellent view of the bay in the distance.

Entrance is 300 yen. Entering the Reihodo to see the giant Kannon statue costs an additional 100 yen.

Yosuien is park from Tokugawa era (1818). This chisen-kaiyu (many pleasures around a central pond) and the stone-made Mitsu-bashi Bridge, which was modeled on the one at Lake Xihu in China, give a special style of the garden.

Wakayama castle

Unfortunately we didn't have enough time to go inside, as we had to catch a ferry to Tokushima, but we were at least able to get some photos from outside.

I visited a friend in Wakayama, stayed two days. More than enough, since there is nothing especially interesting in this city. Worth visiting are the castle, the Kimiidera temple, and the university.
