Smoking!

by huggy93

I'm not condoning smoking or saying you shouldn't smoke, but if you are a smoker.... cigarettes are something that you can buy in Japan at anytime of the day (or night) 24/7. And you can either buy these in a convenience store or from one of these vending machine.Guess you can say that smoking is both a danger... and a pleasure all "rolled" into one.

A serious threat - earthquakes

by Maline

Before going to Japan you must be aware that there is a risk of earthquakes in this country. If you stay one month there is a great risk you will experience at least one tremor, it isn't necessarily that strong though. However, the Tokyo area is prone to a large earthquake of some magnitude, the scientists generally agree upon this. The problem is of course that no one can say when it is due. It may be soon, or it may be decades away.I think the best thing to do is to read up on what you are supposed to do and how to act in case of an earthquake before you go. Once the earth is moving, you won't have time to inform yourself, you have to know how to act. Some advise:Generally it is better to be outside. "Earthquakes don't kill people – buildings do". However, in most of Japans densely populated urban areas it is difficult to get to a clear spot, away from falling electrical wires or debris...

Well, it's not a warning...

by Maline

Well, it's not a warning really, more of a recommendation:If you are going on a shorter holiday, do not go during the summer months. The first part of summer is the rainy season and when summer hits, it gets really really hot and humid! For a person like me, from the North of Europe, too much heat totally imparis my ability to enjoy a place, and as I saud, the heat in Japan is so humid, it knocks the energy right out of you.Best season to visit Japan: Either in April around the cherry-blossom time, that's always great, or in October/November when you can see all the colored leaves in the temple gardens - oh it's soo beautiful then!!

Buy a JR Rail Pass

by daddygila

Transportation ( buses, trains, subway ....and don't even THINK about taxis)in Japan is extremely expensive.A JR Rail pass which must be purchased outside of Japan will pay for itself in just one way to another major city. It is also VERY easy to use and lets you avoid the cumbersome problem of "Purchasing a Ticket."Definitely a MUST HAVE !!!

Bicycles

by Brighterstar

It may sound a bit too much to describe bicycles as a danger but here in Japan, bicycles are surprisingly plenty and sometimes irrtating as they weaved pass you along narrow streets especially crowded pavements. We have to keep watch them coming when we are squeezing our way through crowds. Nevertheless, they obey traffic lights rulings like vehicles.

Summer

by nepalgoods

Summer lasts from June to August and starts normally with a three to four week period of rain. It seems to be my fate to visit such exotic countries only during rainy season . Nevertheless I enjoyed Japan very much. It did not rain all the time, when I was in Japan in June 1991. One contra to travelling during this time is also, that there are not many festivals and temple fairs in Summer. In other times there are so many festivals and parades all over the country, that you cannot see them all.

ATM access limited

by K1W1

Before you arrive in Japan, it would be a wise idea to change some cash into Yen. As ATM machines which accept international credit cards are not so well dispersed in Japan, you are likely to need cash after arriving and long before you see a machine.A useful site is www.atmlocator.com to check if there is an international ATM near you.

Drunk Japanese guys in the hotel hallways!

by woef

As you can see on the quality of the picture, i admit that my situation was also not perfect anymore at 6:30 a.m. .When i arrived at the hotel, I almost tripped over i guy while going to my room. At least my situation was not as bad as this guy. By the way , what you see on the left of him , ... it's his pants. :-) The hotel name is ... Nagoya International Hotel. Nice area by the way. :-)

Disappearing Didgits

by MariaInJapan

Please take a few seconds out of your day to look at the photo. Notice anything odd about it? The people in the picture are part of a research program that has been running for the past 15 years. [They are totally unaware that they have been under observation] Notice their fingers. Nearly all of them have 'Crab Claw Syndrome'. CCS, for short, is an affliction that, although predominantly only attacking the Japanese, can be known to jump ethnic lines. Scientists have only recently pinpointed the root cause of CCS, after years of laborious trials on rab lats. Professor Kenji Basashi, cited the green plastic fake 'grass' in bento boxes as being the culprit behind CCS and has warned the general public to refrain from eating the plastic decorations that come with such lunchboxes.
