-Say hello to the locals! They all know each other and will know that you are from somewhere else. Be nice and say hello! Konichiwa for noon through evening, then konbanwa for late evening. Bow politely and smile and Voila! the universal language.
-There is no tipping in Japan so don't bother.
-If you've had a good meal say, "Gochisosama deshita!" to the owner or cook on your way out.
-Take your shoes off in buildings, restaurants or almost anyplace indoors.
-When shopping, put your money in the tray provided and do not give it to the clerk.
