Things to Do

Outlet Side of Kurobe Dam

Outlet Side of Kurobe Dam, Tateyama

RoseAmano Says:  A rainbow made on this sunny day on the treacherous-looking outlet side of Kurobe Dam, while we marvel at this massive scale of artificial construction.

Lake Side of Kurobe Dam

RoseAmano Says:  The blue waters are calm, and if you have a little time you may take a 30-min. pleasure cruise upon this lake.

Kurobe Dam, Toyama-ken, Japan

Kurobe Dam, Toyama-ken, Japan, Tateyama

RoseAmano Says:  This is a dam built in mass scale which was constructed in the mid-1960's, and is one of the most popular destination sights in Japan. You will arrive here by cable car or trolley bus running under a mountain, and will walk across in the Alpine Route Journey.

Near the top of Mt. Tateyama

Near the top of Mt. Tateyama, Tateyama

RoseAmano Says:  Near the highway bus/trolley bus station can be seen Mikuriga Lake. There is perpetual snow here. There are many wide open walking spaces here. I'd recommend to spend most of your time here, and time your onward journey to avoid the heavy people rush.

RoseAmano Says:  Once going through the various modes of transport and people traffic to get here, it is easy to relax, even though there are many other people, it is wide enough to enjoy your own space here. It is also cool in the midsummer as well.

Now take the highway bus

Now take the highway bus, Tateyama

RoseAmano Says:  At the top end of the cable car, you continue along the Alpine Route Crossing by taking a 23-km highway bus. The altitude here is from 1000-2500m. The buses are comfortable, the scenery is spectacular, and (this is small detail, but nice..) in case of heavy clouds or rain,...

From Tateyama, transfer to the Cable Car..., Tateyama

RoseAmano Says:  ..along the Alpine Route journey. The cable car will lift you 500m in altitude. Be aware that in high-peak season, it is possible to face very long queues (2 hours or so) to ride up the double cable cars. The ticketing process is orderly however, and don't forget to take a...

RoseAmano Says:  As beautiful and efficient as Alpine Route is, to be honest, this just has to be mentioned, or rather shown here. It's just like being at Tokyo Central Station on a Monday Morning!!

RoseAmano Says:  I don't know if it was because of the season or if it is always like this, but a recommendation to avoid is to take the less travelled route in reverse, i.e. from Omachi toward Toyama.

What to Pack

This is actually an "Unpacking List Tip"...

This is actually an "Unpacking List Tip"..., Tateyama

RoseAmano Says:   but if you decide to drive your car for Alpine Route, there is a span of area where cars are not permitted, between Tateyama and Ogizawa Stations. You may, however, commission one of various car courier companies who will drive your car from one point to the other while U...
