In Asahi-mura, your best bet is a bicycle or walking as it's very small. To go shopping, you can catch a bus to Tsuroka which isn't far but the bus only leaves a few times per day but is reliable. If you have a car it's very easy (provided you know how to drive on the left-hand side of the road with the steering wheel on same side) In Yamagata city, you can catch the Shinkansen to Tokyo (about 2 hrs) or a JR train to Sendai and other parts.
