Before leaving the shrine complex on top look for a path that branch off in the opposite direction from Okuno-in, the main temple of Risshaku-ji. This path will lead to Godai-do, an opened but roofed terrace that will give you a superior view of the valley. This is a great place to have you breakfast, lunch, or snack.

Make your way up Yamadera to find the temple’s highest shrine, Okuno-in. The hike up is an easy to medium challenge. There are plenty of places to rest along the where you can take in the natural beauty of Yamadera. If you’re in shape you should be able to make the top in 40 minutes. Most should be able to make in an hour.

Skip the tacky souvenir shops and head right for the main temple entrance. You have to pay an entrance fee of 300yen to climb the mountain. The temple and mountain path open really early (6am-6pm). Views will be better in the afternoon when the sun will be illumining the valley in the east.
