Getting around

Getting around Iwakuni can be easy. At the bus stop at the JR station there is English signs pointing you to the bus area for the Kintai Bridge and the Shin Iwakuni station they won't give bus numbers because all buses that stop at that area are bound for those locations. The route will change depending on the bus but the final destination won't change. If you take the JR train it takes 20 min to Miyajima guchi station (320 yen) (this is where you transfer to the ferry for Miyajima) , 40 min to Hiroshima Station(740 yen). These are the local train times there are rapid trains that don't take as long. The prices are one way. If you have all day you can get off in Miyajima guchi and take the street car into hiroshima (max 270 yen). By car Iwakuni is really easy to get around it is parking that can be difficult. Train station wise there are Shin Iwakuni station, Iwakuni Station (sanyo line), Minami Iwakuni (sanyo line), Nishi Iwakuni (Gantoku and nishikigawa lines), Kawanishi (Gantoku and nishikigawa Lines). These are for Iwakuni proper some of the surrounding communities are considered part of iwakuni. The Kawanishi stop is close to the kintai bridge(walking distance) At the Iwakuni station you can change from the Sanyo line (the ones that run to hiroshima) to the gantoku line (bound for Tokuyama) this line is always on track one and the trains are yellow, or the Nishikigawa line that is always on track zero and has brightly colored trains (usually only one car).

There are numerous train stations in iwakuni. There is a Shinkansen station. There is the main Iwakuni JR station that is no where near the Kintai bridge, but at the main station you can swap trains to either the nishikigawa line or the ganto line. These both have other train stations in iwakuni. There is a station not to far from the Kintai bridge and Iwakuni Castle. The second station is within walking distance of both. The main sanyo line train stops at minami Iwakuni which is close to the Yume town or as close as Iwakuni gets to a mall.

By Car Iwakuni is quite close to Hiroshima. If you go by car take the Chogoku Expressway to the Iwakuni IC.

By Train The Sanyo Shinkansen line runs through Iwakuni and has a stop at Shin Iwakuni Station (Kodama Shinkansen trains). The rapid Shinkansen trains will stop at Hiroshima Station where you can get a local train down to Iwakuni.

Getting a Bus in Iwakuni

I find buses in Japan very confusing because of the lack of English signs. I found the link below which may be useful for getting around, although I don't know how up to date the fares are.
