The Petroleum bar is awful. Haunted by wealthy men of dissolute or promiscuous habits and equally rakish women. The music is dreadful and the bar tender charged me an arm and a leg for a beer and bowl of plasticized stringy 'cheese' which was almost inedible. That was after having paid for entry. Paid for entry - unbelievable ! Then I had to search for the barman in order to get my change back, which seems to be a common occurrence in Kazakhstan - short changing or even non-changing is common. I guess they're missing those days when they could ride down the silk route and rob Samarkand and Bokhara. Lucky for them, the poor sods come to them nowadays... Just don't go. Keep away from the joint. Guns and Roses was somewhat better and the band was reasonably good, but you still have to wait an inordinate amount of time for your change, which sometimes comes eventually, if you're lucky and beg. I guess it gets easier once you become a regular, but I'm afraid I hope that never happens. That would be sad.

A friendly pub with great food that caters for both Ex-pats and Locals, there is a good balance of nationalities. Food is basically International with a strong English section in the menu and Curries (which of course have now been adopted as English !!!). As in English pubs there is a good sized area for standing and sitting at the bar, it has several boothed seating areas that offer a degree of privacy. It has the atmosphere of a real pub, you would think you were in the center of London or Birmingham. Hours are 11AM to late. Many TV screens and a projector for watching sports.

What a shame, I had been to this club many times before you can say I was a regular , my friend Manuel who introduced me to the place when I first arrived to Almaty in December 2007 always told me to be careful the the staff would add to my bill drinks that I did not have and they did but ussually a few bucks, the big one happen on 13 April 2008 of all nights it was my birthday. I arrived with a party of five, my Girl, her mother and a couple of friend including Manuel, we had a few drinks and it was time to go home, we asked for the bill and there it was $ 847 USD, I was the only one drinking whiskey and they claimed I had 40 and the owner came out to talk to us on my request and he agreed and asked that I pay or else, a ripoff is an understament I was robbed, stay away from this place or you will suffer the same fate.

Almaty boasts the hottest nightlife in the whole of Central Asia.It is so abundant with nightclubs that could be called "club city".
Almaty nightclubs fall into two categories:bars with some dancing and dance clubs with bars. The former tend to be more like restaurants..
Dance clubs are generally loud, dark and crowded, filled with techno music or Russian rock. But lovers of quite music and delicate interior will find clubs in Almaty where you can listen to local musicians playing live music, play billards or bowling and sip first rate beer.Cover charges are typically about 500 tenge for women and 1000 tenge for men.

Soho Club is probably one of the best places for good night out at the weekend in Almaty. The place has a large seating area for diners, a bar area, and a small dance floor in front of a small stage. The style is a mixture of American and European, with the occasional splash of Russian influence. And this is also reflected in the menu. The food is good, although a little bit expensive even for Almaty. The clientelle is a mixture of locals and expats.
There is a small entrance fee (1,000 KZT, I think) and there is a wardrobe where you can leave your coat. However, on a busy night the wardrobe occasionally gets filled to capacity and you will have to keep the coat with you. And that can be a bit of a problem on busy nights as it is usually impossible to find a table to sit down at, so you will either have to carry the coat with you all the time or leave it somewhere unguarded.
At the weekends the place starts buzzing from quite early on and keeps going until about 3am. There are usually two or three bands that alternate all through the night. Typically one band will start playing on the hour and play for about 45 minutes. There will then be a 15 minute break before the next band start to play their set. The music is usually pretty good, and the dance floor quickly gets filled up.
Getting drinks can occasionally be a bit of a challenge when the place gets full. There are loads of waiters and waitresses, but unless you're at a table they are usually reluctant to bring you anything. And on a Friday or Saturday night you are unlikely to find a free table unless you have booked one in advance. So the alternative is to make your way to the bar and order your drink there. And that can be a challenge at times as everywhere tends to get pretty packed on a busy night. Just one tip: If you order a cocktail, make sure you ask for it by name. The price of a Screwdriver is for example considerably lower than the price they will charge you for a vodka and orange juice!
