Chocolate disco belows Astana's Radisson SAS is probably the hotest place in town on Friday night for Locals. It is night a great place for expats. You can get in, but don't expect the friendly atmosphere of clubs in other areas of the World.
There are many Local girls out on the floor and milling around. They want to dance, but not with expats. They are there for the express purpose of putting on a show for the local boys who love to stand in thier little groups and talk about the girls on the floor. Thye are decideing which girl they will hit on for the night. Much like a fashion show where the models walk up and down the runway. It's the Kazak way, let the girls put on a show and then pick out your choice. Really a great concept when your part of the game, when your not it's pretty dull.
Try to jump in on the game and you get a few polite "f__k-off" looks before one of the studs try a little more agressive persuasion. Guns and Knives are fair game, though they are seldom more than a reminder to leave well enough alone.
So Choclate is lots of eye candy for the expat, but nothing more. Seems a pitty, because in this town, expats put out more KZT than the locals and a business does quite well when treating expats right.
Dress Code: Usually, just a bit more than levis and t-shirt.

I agree that nightlife in Astana is somewhat poor, if you are a foreigner, like I am you have to rely on your friends (foreigners too) who really rock the house indoors at their own places, locals dont know about it but we really have fun when it happens which is basically every weekend!
The news are that a new place was recently opened, its called Chocolat, really cool club and can be compared to any nice venue in Europe or the US. Girls are beautiful, as they all are in KZ, and the atmosphere is great, I agree that the music is not their best quality, very repetitious and after a while you just feel like screaming a loud "ENOUGH" but still, for kazakh standards its a big step. Chocolat is just below the (also) newly opened Radisson Hotel in the center of the City. It gets packed on weekends and on Wednesday and Thursdays they have jazz sessions and its free entrance!!!! Drinks and food are not cheap and they are very selective at the door but if you look good and you are nicely dressed you shouldnt have any problems in getting in!
Dress Code: No sneakers, look glamorous and "different"!

Pub 69 is by far the best dancing place in Astana. Agreed that the night club scene sucks in Astana however Pub 69 is a saviour. Located on Sefoolina and Mira, near Poocha Department store., Pub 69 has a live music and makes it different from the other places.
Enterance is free. Very few foreigners know about it. Beer is expensive. Food is ok but the live music is good. HOowever the group plays the same sets every weekend so you can go there only once a month....
The other clubs in Astana play house and techno, charge 1500 KZT cover and are dimly lit. Pub 69 plays rock, no charge and well lit.
Dress Code: No Shorts. Jeans and sneakers will do. They haven't learned of the European dress

save your sleep and your money for Almaty. There are a number of good clubs there and a youth culture driven vibe about the place. Astana is for business and Government and not a lot else.

They are building a lot in the new "Northern" capital of Kasakhstan. American style - glas and metal, rules. One can still find some of the old (Celinograd times) wooden architeture too.
