Manas Statue-Bishkek-Kyrgyzistan by Groverdean The statue of Manas (completed in 1981) is placed against the backdrop of the white marble of the moumental Philharmonia building. It depicts Manas, Kyrgyzstan's legendary hero, while riding his magic steed, Ak-Kula, and slaying a dragon. Below, to his right is his wife and counselor, Kanykei, dressed in national Kyrgyz dress worn by some married women of Kyrgyzstan even today. To his left is his advisor, the sage Bakai, also in traditional Kyrgyz clothing. The Manaschis are depicted as they would sit in the yurt and recite the deeds of the founder of the Kyrgyz nation. It's like walking back 30 years into Soviet times. This museum used to be the Lenin Museum, and the entire second floor is dedicated to Lenin. It's facinating. You won't see anything like this in Russia. The third floor of the museum is dedicated to Kyrgyz history. Address: Ala-Too Square

This canyon is beautiful! Only 30 minutes outside of Bishkek by car, you would be insane not to visit over a Saturday or Sunday. Great for hiking, a picnic, picture-taking, or just bumming around, Allah Baatar Canyon is one of those places that forces you to take a step back and say "WOW! I'm in the middle of nowhere!" Don't expect mountain lodges or 5-star restaurants here. In Allah Baatar it's you and the elements, so bring some water and your own snacks. Definately worth a visit. A minimal entrance fee is required. Address: 30 minutes outside of central Bishkek

Monument honouring Soviet Airmen by Groverdean Bishkek is a typical Soviet style city. With it's block apartments, well laid out roads and squares, and the now lesser remnants of Soviet Statues and various other displays of art. I found the old Communist art to be very powerful and a fascination. I like this monument with an actual plane, built to honour WWII airmen. Leave a Comment
