high mountain pastures - jailoo
  • Tip Rating:
  • Jailoos (mountain pastures) are situated high in the high mountains, at an altitude of 2500-3000 m. above sea level. You will be amazed at the sight of mountains.
Jailoo tourism is part of a new approach to developing Kyrgyzstan's tourism industry, a strategy centered on Cultural Tourism. Cultural Tourism emphasizes the interaction and communication of tourists with authentic culture and the everyday life of local people, while encouraging multi-national cooperation and cross-cultural interaction. By taking the tourist into the mountains to spend time in the yurts of Kyrgyz nomads, "jailoo tourism" gives the "guest" a chance to get the taste of Kyrgyz nomadic life.

About 3100 meters above sea level, it is another lovely lake located in Tien-shan mountain range. Son-kul is used by shepherd from the Kochkor region. The surroundings of son-kul are mostly untouched. Perhaps the most surprising fact is that around son-kul you will never see a tree or even a shrub.

    Yaks
  • Tip Rating:
  • Yaks are the mammals that live at the highest altitudes in the world. They can climb up as high as 20,000 ft (around 6,100 m). Yaks tend to live at high altitudes because of their thick coat and vulnerability to diseases. In fact, yaks normally cannot live below 10,000 ft above sea level. Yaks are found at high alpine pasture in Tien Shen mountains, around son-kul area.

Yaks can graze on the alpine grasslands in the summer and during winter on the shrubs in deep snow in rigorous temperatures. The yak looses weight during the winter but recovers and gains weight rapidly with the coming of spring grass.

    Altyn Arashan
  • Tip Rating:
  • Altyn Arashan is the most popular and most accessible (no tent required) trekking destination in Kyrgyzstan. From Karakol, take a bus to nearby Teploklyochenka, from there, it's a two hour walk South to the Ak-Suu sanatorium. This is where you can spend the first night and have a soak in the hot springs. Next morning it's a five-hour climb up a well marked path to Arashan, a beautiful pasture at the foot of the Tian Shan Mountains. You can stay and eat in the collective farm for about 4US$ a night (cheapskates can also pitch their tent), and from there there are plenty of daytrips and longer into the mountains.
After a day of hiking you can unwind in one of the many hotsprings.

Everyone should find their way to Issy kul.
The Lake is beautful. The waters are clear, with small windblown waves. It would feel like the ocean but more relaxing with no tides, big waves to worry about, benches are built right up to the water so you can sit and put your feet in the water. Like I said it feels like the ocean as you look across the expanse of water with a line of white clouds far out over the water. Then you realize that the "clouds are really the snow capped topps of the mountians across the lake. Behind you more snow caps rise so near you feel like you can touch them.

  • Address: North side of the lake
  • Directions: There are many old lodges. I stayed at an old young pioneers(communist boy scouts) camp. Basic functional housing with shared baths but only about $10 a night.

A stop on the Silk Road
  • Tip Rating:
  • It is a pretty long trip through manny bumpy roads and Mountian passes but it is worth it. Tash Rabat is a 1000 year old Caravanasi, a stop on the Silk Road, near the border with China and the Tougart pass. You can feel the history at this massive stone structure and easily imagine a caravan of horses and shaggy camels emerging from the mountians and approaching the camp.
You can camp in a yurt in the vally and locals will sell you nomatic handicrafts.

Song kul is much smaller than Issyk Kul and does not have the relaxing beach and mountian atmosphere but it has a true Kyrgyz charm all of its own. A perfect blue disk set in a high alpine vally, the lake is surrounded by a sparse population of sheep, camels and yurt dwelling people.

Near the lake many large stones are set up in rings. There are no rocks like the boulders anywhere in the vally and no one knows how they got there. Local folklore says that Manas himself, the legiondary figure from Kyrgyz epic poetry, carried the stones there to set up firepits. They are known as the Manas stones.

    Stay in a yurt!
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the highlights of my trip to Kyrgyzstan is the time I spent with a Kyrgiz family living in a yurt (traditional tent). A Swiss aid-organisation, Helvetas, can organise this for you. Go to Kochkorka, at Kochkorkuchasi 111 is the house of Maripa Shakirova who will set you up with a family. You can choose where and how long you want to go, whether you want to spend time in one place or go trekking etc. The price is just a few dollars, which helps your hosts and it's a unique experience!
