The petroglyphs at Cholpon Ata are remarkable - they were carved between 8BC and 5BC. Many are clear enough to make out an Ibex or a Snow leopard hunt. Others are so faded that I had to trust the guide who would say what we were supposed to be seeing. I was not sure whether the guide was self-appointed or official, but he took us around the area for a small tip. As a parting sale, he tried to sell us the information enclosed in the glass display panel as a brochure. We declined. The place was once fenced and the labels put up in a more prosperous time. I did not want to be the tourist who took the last English piece of info at that site.
