Th Mekong Monster

by kenmerk

Legend tells of a dragon like serpent in these waters, whose length can be as long as 15 meters (45 feet). While on Dongsau island, I saw the attached picture posted on a wall of one of the huts there. Allegedly it is a picture taken in 1968 of a Naga that was pulled from the Mekong by some US Servicemen during the Viet Nam War.True or Hoax ??? Who knows... I do know this, if they ever pull something that looks like this out of Loch Ness in Scotland, I guarantee that their mystery would be solved...

Donsau Island

by kenmerk

There is really nothing so special about Donsau Island, except mostly to say that you have planted your feet on Laos soil, I suppose. There are about 20 thatched huts with drinks and beers, and tourist type schlock which is not so different that what you can find over on the Thai side of the Border. So enough with shopping lets move onto a beer or two... (which surprising enough is served relatively cold here...)

Take me to the Mekong..

by kenmerk

It was actually quite fun to quickly zip around in one of those overpowered long tailed boats between the three countries of Burma, Laos, and Thailand. Here the tree in the foreground is in Laos, where the hills of Thailand are in the backgroudn. Burma would be a few hundred meteres off to the right... (out of the picture..)

Lao Beers on the Mekong...

by kenmerk

I certainly can't say that I have seen the country of Laos, with just a couple hour excursion across the river to Donsau Island.Though I have to say, sitting there on the north riverbank of the Mekong river, with a cold Lao beer in hand, watching the long tails cruise by with Thailand in the background did feel pretty darn good....

Kids in Laos

Kids in Laos are pretty & happy. This baby girl, daughter of our boat captain, 10 months old with bright eyes and great smiles. My playmate during the long boat ride. Check out my TRAVELOGUE for more photo of Laos kids.

Fishing Village

by vigi

After a few hours of ride, we finally stop at a fishing village. Passengers flocks over the shore, as it was quite boring sitting inside with boat watching similar scenery along the river, this village seems like a great discovery.

Slow Boat (2 Day 1 Night)

by vigi

After passing through Laos immigration, we took a connection tuktuk to the pier. This is the slow boat to Luang Prabang. There were 2 boats, I was lucky to jump on this bigger one which I can stand and walk around the boats, more comfy than the smaller one. It accomodate 40+ persons.

Lao Immigration

by vigi

This is the Laos Immigration check point. Very simple, only have 2 counters. The funny thing is I need to show my passports 4 times before getting onto the slow boat. First to the Laos immigration officer, then to I don't know what officer to check & confirm my stamp on my visa. 3rd time is before getting onto a tuktuk to the boat pier. Then 4th times, to exchange for my boat ticket. High security!

Crossing the Boarder

by vigi

8 o'clock in the morning, we already queue up in the Thai immigration office. After checking out from Chiang Khong, we took these small boat to cross the boarder. Laos immigration is only one river apart.
