Mekong river

by SirRichard

This huge river, one of the biggest in Asia, crosses the country from north to south and is one of the most important communication ways, as the roads are few and not very good.It is the border with Thailand and Cambodia in some parts.

Buddhist Stories

by SirRichard

In most of the temples in laos you will find these paintings in the outside walls. As many of the people there are illiterate, this is an easy way to teach them Buddha's life, even when the Temple is closed...

Inside a buddhist monastery

by SirRichard

In Luang Phabang I had the chance to visit a buddhist monastery. I met a monk in the street and had a little chatting with him. Then he offered me to show me how they lived there, and it was really interesting. I had a poetic idea of it, but in fact they have all the walls covered with thai magazines pages with pics of David Beackham, Cameron Diaz, cars, motorcycles... just like any other teenager!

" Food for Thought !! "

by into-thin-air

It is now almost 40 years since the French " left " Laos but the typical French cuisine can still be found, even on small street stalls !!Also the French bakeries are still churning out delightful baguettes and French bread !!Just watch what you fill them with !!???!!!!!

Kid Kid Kid Everywhere in Laos

by coolbrian

I have no child, but I like children so much. Seeing the kids in Laos, I always remember my childhood, full of dreams and colors. If it were possilbe, I would like to spend my childhood again in this natural land - Laos. Because Laos is the place where all my dreams started in the childhood of my last life. Diang Kong is the most beautiful and lovely girl I have ever met in Laos. She looks like an angel. Just like any other child in Laos, she was born in nature and is growing up in nature.God bless the children in Laos.

Baggage Tags

by jmmorgan

When we exited the airports at both Luang Prabang and Vientiane we discovered that you simply cannot get out until a man has taken the pink tag from your ticket and matched it to the one on your bag.The problem was that he didn't seem to speak any English and we hadn't a clue what he was asking us for!

Email

by jmmorgan

Internet and email is widely available in the towns such as vientiane and Luang Prabang. It is quite cheap too - about $1 for 30 mins. Access is very slow though. It takes about 1 hour to read and send a few emails

Visas

by jmmorgan

You can get a visa on arrival at Wattay airport vientiane. The cost is $30 cash and you have to have a passport photo. The process is confusing and the immigration staff unhelpful! You first must line up for a form, then line up to hand in your form, passport, photo and cash and then line up again to collect your passport back again.

Credit Cards

by jmmorgan

Visa and Mastercard are both accepted in Laos but not widely and only in expensive hotels and restaurants. Always carry sufficient cash for your needs and don't assume that your plastic will be accepted.

Money

by jmmorgan

It is not really necessary to convert your currency into Kip particularly if you are carrying US Dollars. If you do decide to make an exchange be aware that there are about 8500 kip to the dollar and there are no large denomination notes. I exchanged $15 which pretty much wiped out the stock at our hotel! Also you cannot take the money out of the country with you as it cannot be exchanged in other countries.
