The food market is by the Mekong bank in the very centre of town and by the end of the main square - where colonial houses are. You cannot miss since it's so central. It's good place to try local food: they have different kind of fish, local sauces, vegetable and meat broths, chicken, pork and buffalo BBQ, skin stripes, laap, condiments and vegetable to eat it with, and of course - here you can buy sticky rice.
We usually bought fish BBQ or papaya salad with some other ingredients and then ate it in the garden of our guesthouse. If they would have any seats with small table we would eat right next to food market as it's excellent place to watch people.
Food is clean and safe to eat - having generally spicy properties (soups and sauces) it has its positive (or negative) effect on body, depends on how you're used to it, of course.
As elsewhere in Lao towns: there are of course sit-down restaurants sprouting in pleasant settings by Mekong and charming streets, so you don't get hungry. But so far I have yet to find one which would me return another time. On other hand, we quickly 'adopted' the food market as our favourite place to fetch some nice foods.
Favorite Dish: It's worth to experiment and try diffent things. It's cheap and good, large fish cost up to 15 000 KIP. If this is your first stop in Laos, try Lao papaya salad. Or cucumber or green bean salad. Thakhek tomatos are excellent too.
You can ask to add less spices or additives (a lot of MSG is used in dishes) or pungent sauces before your papaya or bean or cucmber salad will be composed in front of your eyes.
