There are few places in Thakhek where you can rent a motorbike. Daily rent is from 80 000 KIP to 100 000 (in 2009), depends on place. If you stay in bigger guesthouses they can arrange it for you. Ask also for helmet. This way you'll have enough time to explore this beautiful place by your own: there are many caves in this areas, small villages, nice mountains and green rivers. See these places in National protected areas, you won't regret it.

Tuk Tuk drivers are quite a species here - they got angry with you if you tried to negotiate lower price. They charged us 15 000 KIP/person for ride to the town, to the Khammouane Inter hotel precisely. In the end we didn't stay there so we walked around with our bags in look for better accomodation. We did some bargain with tuk tuk drivers but most time was just wasting time. Sadly they charge locals the same price, but if you're foreigner they will try to charge more. The prices of gasoline in 2009 were down but the services were up.
One guy took us two by his tuk tuk and 5 or 6 other local passengers in the direction of some lodge but we didn't like what we saw and he wanted us to charge 10 000 each for that distance - it was about 300 m ride. My husband had then negotiated that 15 000 Kip fare to town, but if he didn't speak Lao who knows what we'd had to pay in the end.
