Life along the Mekong
Most of local life is focused on the river Mekong. Be sure to go down to the river to see how those, other than monks, live here.
The former Royal Palace is now a museum. Not too much inside, but the grounds are worth a stroll. Several temples in the compound are very colorful in a uniquely Laotian style.
You will need some time to explore the rich diversity of the temples, much more interesting than in Thailand.

Pak Ou caves is the caves of 1000 buddahs. Every buddhist who visits this temple brings another buddha statue.
