a perfect place for sunset, Sala Khounta by richiecdisc Sala Khounta is the kind of place you might build in a Southeast Asian town if you were going to retire there. It is a simple bamboo thatched balcony that overlooks the Mekong and from its vantage point far from the city center, it is a perfect place to watch the sunset. Of course, they have Beer Lao and also some tasty Lao snacks like spring rolls to help fend off the munchies until you can grab a proper meal back in town. It’s also a great place to meet fellow travelers who come to relax after a long day of sightseeing.
It is very casual here but a good idea to wear long light pants as once the sun goes down, mosquitos come out to feed. Insect repellent is a must too. Leave a Comment Theme: Eating and DrinkingAddress: Sala Sunset on the Mekong RiverDirections: This is a fair but scenic walk from town along Thanon Fa Ngum until it becomes Sala Sunset. Stay on the river, you can't go wrong, even in the dark!

another Titch meeting by richiecdisc This is the kind of fancy place I do not normally frequent but it was well located and they too had Beer Lao on tap. Actually, the food menu was not super expensive and beer was about the same here as anywhere in town. Other than right on the river, it was tough to beat the ambience either. The lush beer garden is set in front of a gorgeously restored French colonial house which has a more funky atmosphere than the bustling patio bar.
This is a place to wear your best outfit but as a traveler, they will accept just about anything you show up in. Leave a Comment Theme: Eating and DrinkingAddress: Thanon SitthathilatDirections: This is the main street in town and near Namphou Garden so you are bound to walk by it at some point.

scenically situated on the Mekong by richiecdisc The night market that runs along the Mekong River was not my favorite for actually eating though there were heaps of locals and travelers down there. It was a fun place to grab a beer and some snacks as you watched the sunset or enjoyed the cool evening breezes. There is an array of makeshift places and they differ little from one another. Find one with an empty table and a decent view and enjoy.
Though it was generally warm even in the evenings, it is a good idea to wear long pants and even some shoes with socks to avoid mosquito bites. Leave a Comment Theme: Eating and DrinkingAddress: Thanon Fa NgumDirections: On Fa Ngum between Thanon Chao Anou and Thanon Francois Nginn.

The square at night by SirRichard This centrally located square with a fountain in the middle is a common meeting point and a good reference in Vientiane. Here you can find many restaurants (mostly french) with terraces where you can enjoy a quiet cool dinner. If you head southwards to the river, you will find on the way many bars and terraces for a drink too. Leave a Comment Theme: Eating and Drinking

Go there if you like: - lively atmosphere with live concerts - can be xciting - meet other travelers, expats and well situated Lao - want to eat something (Lao, Indian, Chinese, Western) with your cocktail or beer - sitting in terrace under the shade and watch other people, hehe... ... and if you stay in the centre, the old colonial quarters beacuse it's near almost everything. It's very popular place, nice building and terrace, big one, you cannot miss it.
I've seen people wear everything. Theme: Eating and DrinkingAddress: Nam Phou circle.Directions: By the fountain, where Pang Kham road meets Setthathirat.Website: www.khopchaideu.com

In Vientiane there are few discotheques, once we ended up quite outside of the city centre in Mee Na on Thadeua Road. It is a big place with neatly dressed young Lao ladies and men, we didn't see a falang there... Costumers seem obviously loaded if you watch what they wear and how they consume alcohol, only few wore something simple like t-shirts or street-wear. First you must pay the entry, it is about 20 000 KIP, and you have to show your bags.... and then you have to pay something like 20 000 KIP for a Beer Lao, and - if you ask me - that's not at all cheap! But I think that's how it is if you go to discotheques here, even the smaller places in Vientiane aren't much cheaper. In fact, if you go to Don Chane Palace, you will pay more for a drink, but of course it's a top place, place for rich kids and tourists and the only place (discotheque) in the town opened after midnight as I was told. That one had some hip hop that night, nothing special or interesting one, something what seems to be really popular here in Vientiane within trendy youth. Ah!
We wore casual, weren't told to change, but most wear their best clothes... Theme: NightclubAddress: Thadeua roadDirections: ask your tuk-tuk drives to take you, it's near Indian embassy and everyone knows where it is... too far to walk!

The first time I saw this bar was during the day and I thought it was long closed and awaiting renovations. It looked grungy, raw and very homemade as I squinted through the glass looking for signs of occupancy. It turned out I was partly right. I wandered past later in the evening and the place was in full swing. They have sofas, a pool table upstairs, a sports room (TV and more sofas) and a traditional bar. It is dimly lit and seems to have a core of regulars. The decor is pretty basic - a couple of old whiskey signs and a menu or two. They haven't tried to emulate the wild west mahogany style that seems to be the norm throughout south-east Asia. The music was the most striking thing during my first visit though - it was Franz Ferdinand followed by T-Rex. No Hot Chocolate or Robert Palmer like every other bar in town. Very cool atmosphere. I've never seen any bar like it in the region - it was more like an underground bar in Moscow than an establishment in downtown Vientiane. I ended up calling in at the Samlo Pub most nights I was in Laos - worth checking out!
No beach crowd in here - dress cool. Leave a Comment Theme: Eating and DrinkingAddress: 101-103 Sethathirat Road, Ban Mixay, VientianeDirections: Two streets back from the river.
