start your day with some zing! by richiecdisc This was a Lonely Planet suggestion so no surprise that many a backpacker was there though in Vientiane that never amounted to more than one other non-local than us. It was decidedly still popular with those that call Vientiane home, and for good reason. It was a no frills affair with simple wooden tables and service was very prompt. It was very friendly too as whenever we walked by after we had ate there, they beckoned us back in. We generally went in too, even if for just a quick ice coffee.
I’ve always been a big lover of Vietnamese ice coffee in the States so I was happy to hear that Laos had perhaps the best coffee in the region. This might be true but it was very hard to find anything that was not weak or too sweet. This place was a real find in that respect. For those unfamiliar with the beverage, it should be a very strong black coffee like an espresso in its bitterness. This is added to sweetened condensed milk which adds not only a good dose of sugar but also the creamy texture. They also had Chinese doughnuts and fresh baguettes if you went early enough. My favorite breakfast was xeemal (pork) with eggs with a baguette (10,000 KIP or $1). Breakfast for two with coffee was under $3. Beer Lao on tap and plump chicken by richiecdisc This place looked a bit upscale from the outside but it was so far from the tourist area that it turned out to be just as cheap as most places anyway. It was fairly empty but it was a bit late for lunch and very early for dinner. It looked like the kind of place that well to do Laos might head out for a cheap meal and some beers. It was clean and the service was attentive.
I’ll admit that the main reason I wanted to come here was they had Beer Lao on tap. I had just had it in bottle form and was a bit disappointed in it after all the hype from fellow travelers. Well, they did have it on tap and it was cheap, but it was not much better than the bottles. Still after walking a good forty five minutes in the heat of the afternoon, it tasted good enough to quaff. The meals were good sized and fairly prized too. We had an order of ping kai that made the stall versions pale in comparison. We also had a tasty papaya salad and some laap with sticky rice. I had got sick on laap in Luang Prabang as I had tried it in its traditional raw form, and raw pork in Laos is maybe not your best choice. This version was cooked and still quite tasty. I had picked up a fresh baguette at a market on the way over and the waiter did not seem too bothered by us eating it with our meal. We had ordered quite a bit and even had two pitchers of beer with the bill coming to 55,000 KIP ($5.50!). local delicacies at the night markets by richiecdisc If you went to Germany and didn't try bratwurst, you would miss something. Italy without some pasta, forget it. So, why do so many people traveling to Asia insist on eating backpacker banana pancakes? Ok, if you are a vegetarian, that's your tough luck. But if not, you should try the local delicacies and the best place to do that is at the night markets. The one pictured was not the more popular one down by the river but one on a couple streets over from Thanon Samsenthai. You can find places to eat local foods all over the city. The best thing other than the cheap prices is that you can see what you are getting before you try it. Just point and ask how much.
At this particular market, our favorite was the grilled pork. It reminded D very much of Kasslerbraten in Germany. This is smoked pork and must say, this grilled pork was quite tasty and cheap too. The girl that worked the stall knew exactly what we wanted every time we returned. And return we did, even for just a snack if we had already eaten! It was a side street on the right.

foe & lemon shakes, a staple by richiecdisc This was a great little place for lunch that somehow managed to stay cool even in the heat of the day. There was a huge wok and the chef put on quite a show frying up his ingredients. The service was quick and the food was piping hot when it arrived on the table too.
Their specialty was foe, a great conglomeration of fried noodles, veggies and your chosen meat. We enjoyed this but our favorite thing was the frozen fruit shakes. Lots of places had them but this one added soy milk to them and it made them particularly yummy. I liked the lemon ones. Soy milk and lemon sounds like a strange combination but I became positively addicted to them. Lunch for two with a shake each was 32,000 KIP (just over $3). not as big as it looks by richiecdisc There are a number of ping kai stands scattered around the city but the best seem to be clustered near the Maninyom Supermarket. These are simple places where you can point to a nice piece of chicken that is grilling before your eyes. The one we liked was at the northern end of Thanon Chao Anou as you could not only get the tasty chicken there but also tam, a spicy papaya salad.
You just go to the various stalls and get what you want to bring back to your very low plastic table. Order your tam first as they make it fresh and will take longer than the chicken as that is already grilling. Also, grab a beer beforehand too as easier to leave that on the table while you get the rest. There were some hungry dogs around so do not leave your food unattended! The chicken is not as big as it looks at these places. It seems they cut off the majority of the meat for use at more upscale restaurants and leave a think though very tasty layer on the bone. Several boats run "dinner cruises" on the Mekong. I went on the one that is just after the big Lane Xang boat (anyone with mobility issues should do the Lane Xang because it looked like the easiest to board). Actually these boats are more like floating restaurants and you don't really cruise during dinner so get there early, eat and take pictures of the sunset and then you will be off for a very short cruise once it gets dark. Now please forgive me because I don't know any nautical language but you should sit on the side of the boat that is to your right as you go up the Mekong - the Laos side and not the Thailand side if you want to see the shore lights on the cruise. However, for sunset photos the Thailand side is better.
Everything is inexpensive and the beer is cold. It might be nicer to go in a group so that you can try lots of things. Theme: OtherPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: Off Ounkham RoadDirections: Along the Mekong

The colonial building by SirRichard This classy french chalet is a good option if you wanna try Lao food in a high standard place. Inside, the place is like a private house, though the dishes are a bit expensive for the Vientiane standard Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than averageAddress: Samsenthai Rd + Chanthakoumanne RdDirections: Near the That Dam stupa

Some of the huts by SirRichard By the riverside there are a group of food huts that have nice terraces over the Mekong river. It might be a little hot for lunch but is an ideal place for dinner, where you can find local food at very reasonable prices. They have roughly the same menus, so just choose the nicest terrace! Another Laotian traditional food eat with sticky rice. Papaya salad taste sour.. essentially most of the laos food taste sour and salty, thats how the sticky rice is eat together so that it helps to reduce the salty and sour of the dish. I never tried young papaya in malaysia. I had my first try on papaya that hasnt ripe in Cambodia, eat with french loaf and pate; the second time in Laos.. papaya salad! Leave a Comment
