local drink vendors are better than Coke by richiecdisc Why buy a Coke that you could easily purchase in your own country when you can try something local? Not only are these beverages more healthy but they are cheaper too and contribute more to the local economy.
Orange juice is popular as is sugar cane drinks. Leave a Comment Theme: Food and DrinkDirections: They are mobile so just keep your eyes open.

just fruits by richiecdisc The fruit stands in Vientiane were among the best in Laos with a great variety and good prices too. Sellers were not pushy and were helpful if you wanted something.
Jack fruits and papayas were a favorite but there is something for everyone. Dig in!
Unlike many neighboring countries, it did not see so important to bargain for things. Leave a Comment Theme: Food and DrinkDirections: There are loads of them but we liked Thanon Samsenthai best.

The morning market of Vientiane by LotusV8 Quite amazing! Here You can find everything that You can find in Thailand, but I didnīt find it cheaper. The goldmarket at second floor was incredible, I have never seen so much gold in my lifetime - is it real gold??? - very strange!
Clothes, handicrafts, shoes, opium pipes etc.... It is hard to find things that You want to buy, t-shirts????
You must haggle a lot to get a good price, the normal price is 30- 50 % of the asked price. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherDirections: Take a tuk-tuk or walk with the help of Your map.

by aemilys This is just one of several bookshops in Vientiane selling mostly used books. You can exchange books here too. They don't give you a fabulous exchange rate but then again it's a business and they gotta make a living too. In any case, I got a wonderful Barbara Pym novel and a copy of "Another Quiet American" which is a must read in Vientiane. I left that really boring Pulitzer prize winning Oppenheimer biography, a copy of "Bangkok Tattoo" and 5 dollars so a fair exchange all in all.
Books in English
The used books are not cheap (5 USD and up for used paperbacks) but all is relative and.... how bad do you need something new to read? Theme: BooksAddress: 54/1 Pangkham RoadDirections: Right across from Lao Airlines

Textile Section of Morning Market by Rodan44 Vientiane's large indoor morning market is a sprawling bazaar similar to many others found throughout Southeast Asia, although definitely much larger than most. Appliances, jewelry, clothing, silk, handicrafts, food, pirated CDs/DVDs, and pretty much everything else you could possibly need in Laos. Even if you're not shopping for anything in particular, this is a great place to mingle with the locals and discover what Laos has to offer.
We went with one goal in mind... buy as much Lao textiles as we could carry on our backs. Lao weaving is some of the finest in the world, and the morning market has a large section on the bottom floor devoted to selling Lao textiles in every possible size and color. And if you buy in bulk like we did, then you can be assured of getting a very nice discount off their already bargain prices. There is also a stall that specializes in antique textiles, which are very rare and cost hundreds of dollars each.
Stunningly beautiful Lao silk scarves can be bought for US$4 or less each if you buy several from the same vendor and haggle well. Leave a Comment Theme: Local CraftDirections: Lane Xang Avenue, central Vientiane

This is the biggest market in Vientiane - and, despite the name, is open fron 7.00am until 4.00pm. Two stories of shops, ranging from textiles, clothing, homewares, local craft, jewellery, electronics and virtually anything you could imagine, is available in this vast collection of small stores within a Department store structure. We certainly found the prices more expensive than in Luang Prabang, paricularly for the Hmong needlecraft, but there was a degree of negotiation possible. Theme: Other

Talat Sao (the morning market) by ValbyDK Talat Sao (or the morning market) is a shopping mall located in the centre of Vientiane - at the corner of Thanon Lane Xang and Thanon Khu Vieng. The mall consists of many small shops and restaurants and you can buy anything there: Clothes, electronics, watches, gold, jewellery, handicrafts and souvenirs. The Talat Sao Mall opened in December 2007, and replaced some of the old Talat Sao buildings. I have read that the mall is going to expand in 2009, but dont known if that is true as I didnt see any construction sites. The mall is open from 7am to around 4pm daily. Another shopping option could be the Khouadin Market just behind the central bus station. To me it looked like a local market while the mall more a tourist place.

The morning market is one of the cheapest that I have seen. There are plenty of knock off purses and clothing for mere dollars. Have fun and buy what you want, you won't find much cheaper in the main city of Vientiane, but if you go south or north in Laos you can get some even better deals.
The locals start high so don't forget to negotiate but we had to keep asking ourselves, why are we trying to bargain for 10 cents? Leave a Comment Theme: Local Craft
