We took the bus from Luang Prabang to Vientiane - largely because our trip was a little bit too flexible - arrived in LP to find it was much more of a tourist mecca than the previous year, and planes were booked out for several days to depart the city. It actually took us 2 days to be able to get a bus anyway! We chose the 1st class bus, which was barely more expensive than the next one down - and rightly so! It looks good, but it was hot and stuffy, and the ride was VERY slow - by virtue of the heat and the very mountainous conditions. Trip was roughly 8 hours - and we were very pleased to get to Vientiane, and get off the stuffy thing!

Along the way, at a comfort stop, I *happened* to notice a plain clothes person getting off the bus with an AK47 - and was subsequently told that there had been attacks on the tourist buses over the previous few months! I had not been aware of the soldiers placed along the road - but became more acutely vigilant for them! We did not really feel at risk, but it definitelyu pays to be aware of the local news before making travel plans.

    Cost was roughly $12.

    Reconfirming airline tickets

You must reconfirm your airline tickets in Laos, to avoid your flight booking being cancelled.
However, a big advantage of this is that the check-in time is reduced from two hours to 1 1/2 hours. At smaller airports, you can get away with one hour.
Note that Lao Airlines flights often leave early to provide a buffer against possible flight delays later in the day.
International Lao Airlines flights cannot be reconfirmed at the sales office in the domestic terminal at Wattay Airport. You need to go next door to the international terminal (or to the office in town near Nam Phu Place). The airport sales office closes at 4.30pm!

There's no shortage of these little vehicles to get around Vientiane - and its ideal, as the distances are not large within the city. We did find that many of the drivers have little English though, and it was often difficult to communicatre where we wanted to go. Therefore, its a good idea to carry a map to show the drivers your desired destination.

Tuktuks are by far the best way to get around Vientiane cheap (if you don't want to walk). These little vehicles look a bit like motorcycles with a seating area in the back. Not incredibly comfortable and the ride in the tuktuk can get a bit smelly (exhaust gases of other cars and mopeds) and maybe even dusty, but it's well worth the money.

The tuktuk drivers usually charge you way too much, so bargaining is essential!! You should pay approximately US$0.25 per kilometre, as long as your total trip is less than 20 kms. So basically, for a trip around Vientiane, you would never pay more than approx. US$1-2.

    Visa run BKK to VTE

  • I took the #69 night train from BKK - upper sleeper Bt688. Train was running late as it took 13 hours to get to Nong Khai. Bt20 for mini-bus to Lao immigration. Visa process was quick and painless. Paid Bt1550 (or USD31), the extra buck is the "weekend fee". Entry fee of Bt20 and then off to the taxi area. Took about 15 minutes. Taxi into town cost Bt300 which is expensive for VTE but hey, the day before I was in BKK!

If you don't want to spoil your time while travelling between Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, take advantage of the Asia Discovery pass by Bangkok Airways. Laos Airlines, Bangkok & Siem Reap Airways are participating in it.
We flew Bangkok - Vientiane, Luang Prabang-Siem Reap, Siem Reap - Bangkok for US$240 (excluding taxes) which is a real bargain.
the pass is valid for domestic flights in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia.

  • Mekong river betwwen Vientiane and Pak Lay - Vientiane
    Mekong river betwwen Vientiane
    and Pak Lay
    by picek
There are three ways to get to Pak Lay:
    1. slow boat
    2. speed boat
    3. local bus

Going by slow boat you'll need to get to Kaoliew boat/ferry station, which is about 10 km outside the VTE centre. Take tuk-tuk. Slow boat to Pak lay leaves few days a week (Fridays for sure), around 9 am (it is never really punctual) and it's recommended to be there before 9 in order to sort out ticket and something what they call immigration (which is strange, because you don't leave Lao teritorry really and you'll land in Pak Lay... on the other hand, you'll be flowing on the borderline, so it somehow make sense). In the immigration "office", you'll be required to show your passport or identification paper if you're Thai, Lao, or working in Lao, then pay some small fee before departure - we were charged 2000 KIP. The officer will only make a note in their notebook including your name, destination and nationality plus they'll take money.
You can pay the ticket on the boat (in this case they can sometimes charge more) or the ticket office and as a foreigner you'll pay 130 000 KIP. If you live there or work or Lao national, you'll pay less. It's a long journey, about 9 hrs to Pak Lay and about 5-6 hrs to Sanakham so take snacks or lunch with you and drinking water. There is toilet on the boat, which can be sometimes very small place (depends on the boat) and you need to have your toilet paper.
It's probably the nicest mode of transport to Pak Lay and the most comfortable too. You'll learn a lot about Mekong on that journey.

    Motorbikes for hire, Vientiane
    by Hewer
The hotel I stayed at offered motorbikes for hire, although I never took them up on it. They looked to be in good condition and some of them are off-road bikes. They were charging 1000 baht per day plus petrol. It could be cheaper but I didn't try to get a lower price.

I didn't go ahead with it because my insurance didn't cover motorbikes but Vientiane seemed fairly tame as far as traffic goes. There are wide streets and the traffic was fairly sparse. It's probably the only south-east Asian capital where I'd drive or ride anything.

The Haysoke Guest House is located at 083/1-2 Heng Boun Rd, which runs parallel to the river about four blocks back in the center of town. There were plenty of other places around too though.

You should pay around 10,000 Kip for travelling by Tuk Tuk within Vientiane. You can even pay 5,000 in some cases.

You may be quoted 20,000 or 30,000 at first but just walk away and they will soon reduce the price. Or better just state the destination and the price and they can either take it or leave it.
