Sayabouly province in general is famous for herds of wild (and domesticated) elephants and in Lao imaginery that's the place in the country with most of them. fermented tea leaves

Local people here would often use fermented tea leaves as stimulant instead of coffee specially in the remotest areas of the district. They take older and larger tea leaves from the tea trees which grow at large in the native forests. After leaves are picked they are placed for several weeks or months in the bamboo stem and placed under the earth to start the process of fermetation. In that time those become ready to use. You'd enhance its taste and effect by adding some salt and chillies and then wrap it altogether with leaf and place it by the jaws from where you slowly suck out the juice . It has very bitter taste. Some people would suck large amounts of tea leaves every day. Interestingly, many village people who use tea leaves this way would never make or drink tea nor coffee.
