Wat Ban That

This is very small temple in Ban That village. It looks very old but it was difficult to get information on exact age. It is certainly one of the most interesting in this province and before you enter to take a look inside you have to get permission from the old temple 'guard' - so is the local culture here. There's only one Buddha statue at the altar and few smaller boddhisatwas but that's all what it is inside - they keep it very modest. See also the paintings above the door with pictures from (good) life and carved front facade. Temple is hidden behind larger wooden one on the yard with bodhi tree.

short ferry ride into Sayabouly

Unless you enter Sayabouly province from Thailand you'll have to use ferry to cross Mekong from other provinces. There is one ferry crossing in Pak Lay (to/from Vientiane province), and another - and more oftenly used in Tha Deua village to/from Luang Prabang province. It's short ride, it takes only a few minutes to cross Mekong but it may take some time to wait in line before ferry unload passengers, trucks and cars at the other side. Scenery at Tha Deua is quite beautiful and there are lots of snack and drink stalls by the road at ferry station on both sides. Shores of Mekong here provide fertile grounds during the dry season when people use them for temporary vegetable gardens. Ferry looks like an antique thing - but it works good still. Nam Pouy - Hmong village

There are lots of Hmong villages in Nam Pouy NPA. Also, there are mixed Hmong-Lao, Lao, Khmu-Lao, Tai Dam and Tai Lu villages in that low density mountainous area. Some are difficult to access and one can go there only with their own car, but the road is bad. Most still don't have electricity and have very basic medical service, markets and schools. In a daytime these are beautiful places to explore, however one must always ask permission before taking photos and roaming around with camera because these are sensitive border and military controlled areas where little foreigners are seen.Usually Hmong houses are made of simple material which can be found locally: straw, grass, bamboo, wooden planks... those who can afford will build house of bricks and concrete as those materials are more popular and durable. wat Si Mung Khun in Ban Gnay

This is one of the oldest temples in Thongmixay district and still well preserved. See the wooden carvings in the front facade with many small mirrors, floral and animal designs in blue and white color, a kind of which you seldom see elsewhere. There you can also see wonderful three headed elephant carving, the old symbol of Lao state. Decoration of the front doors contain the story from Indian epic Ramayana, the picture of woman showing bare breasts and touched by man along with other creatures. There are nowsadays 2 monks living there and about 12 novices.Temple was caught by fire some time ago, but it is said that Buddha statue wasn't harmed at all, even the red robe didn't burn. It is important place of worship for local residents and the village itself is located in lovely rural setting. Ban Gnay is about 48 km from Pak Lay near Thai border.
