So, you've come to the remote village and you want to go back to town with local transport. First thing you need to find out is when you'll be able to catch local pick up or truck or songthaew into your direction. Usually they commute in early mornings, between 6-8 am. Between larger towns they drive also laters, but most people will want to travel to town's market early and get back in afternoons.

Then you need to find out where is the pick up station or if there's not any you'll have to stand by the road and wawe it down, normally every driver will stop if really not too full. In most cases the passengers will make place for you as long as there is any.

Mornings are cold and wearing warm jacket is good thing. The dust will cover you everywhere so don't bother about it too much - you cannot avoid it. You can protect your hair with shawl or something or use sun glasses to protect your eyes or wrap your face and body in large towel - maybe you'll worry less about how you look when your ride is over.

a good kind of songthaew

If you're backpacking in the area and have no your own cycle or vehicle you'll be spending many hours on privately owned pick ups and songthaews when you want to make a move to other place. Sometimes these won't have any bench or shadow on the trailer but those between common destinations will have it and at least some roof to protect from excessive sun. Public buses are by that date nonexisting between towns and villages in the province, but there are bus connections between Luang Prabag and Sayabouly and Vientiane to Pak Lay.

Be ready for dusty roads and sometimes fast drivers who will hit road craters - in which case sitting on a bench or rice bag gets painful. Most often drivers will wait that crowd fills the last inch of the place in his vehicle so it will get from moderately crowded to very uncomfortable - when you need to hold your things for hours with little chance to move a bit. Drivers pick up other passengers from local villages along the way with whatever things they want to take with.

Positive thing about that kind of travel is that you get in closer touch with locals.
