A Cute Baby with Coils of Rope to Bless Her

by coolbrian

This lovely baby is the daughter of the boss of the hotel where we stayed at our first day in Luang Prabang. She was the most beautiful baby I have even seen in Laos.Have you noticed a coil of rope surrounding her right hand?In Buddhism the two coils of ropes on her both hands have been endued magic power by buddha, which will bless her as time elapses in her life.By the way is she look a bit like the Amerian child movie star Shirley Temple?God Bless You Baby!!!

Lovely Wooden Handcart Everywhere in Laos

by coolbrian

This photo was taken in the small village just in front of Khouangxi Waterfall in Luang Prabang. In many other villages of Vang Vieng and other places of Laos we could also see young children push a wooden handcart loaded with a lot of goods. So many kids in Laos grow up with the accompanying of this lovely handcart. I just like it. I wish I could have had one like that when I was a kid.

A Fully-covered Sleeping Girl

by coolbrian

When I was in the samll border town near Sepon in Laos, I found this sleeping girl's dress was so special. She seemed to have tried to cover all her body to protect her soft and tender skin being hurt by scorching sunlight. She looked like a cute doll in a shopwindow!!!

Sleeping Under a Truck?

by coolbrian

A truck driver is sleeping in the sleeping bag hanged under the inside of the truck (just in front of the right back wheel). Sorry, my photo is not clear enough, you have to observe it very carefully. The day dream the driver had while sleeping there must be very beautiful.

An Unknown Ball Game

by coolbrian

In Savannakhet, I saw people were playing a kind of ball game. I didn't know the name of it exactly. It looks like requiring good skills of throwing with your hand. Next time I go to Laos, I will have a try and enjoy it. So how about you?

Have U seen any guy Drive Motorcycle like that?

by coolbrian

It was the first time in my life to see a woman (also a person) drive motorcyle with only one hand while the other hand holding an umbrella to protect herself from scorching sunlight. So cool...haha, you wanna have a try?

by ramblinsarah

R-E-S-P-E-C-T!obviously this is crucial when traveling anywhere, but especially so in a very traditional place like Laos.Probably the most important thing is dress, especially for women. Girls, forget the tank tops. They're marginally ok in Thailand, but not in Laos. The same goes for short shorts or skirts more than a few inches above the knee. I know, I sound like a prude, but Lao people are very modest. They probably won't say anything if you wear a tank top, because politeness is paramount in laos, but no one will like it very much (except adolescent boys, of course). And guys, no parading around topless - this isn't Koh Samui and Lao people think it's disrespectful. My other piece of advice is to go with the flow. Things often seem very 'inefficient' in Laos. Buses stop for an hour for no reason, your food takes an hour to come, your room is not spotlessly ok. It can be easy to get...

Best not to show strong displays of emotion, I made the mistake of complaining about my room in Savannaket - this lasted for ages and looking back i shouldn't have bothered, this is no developed country.

by RTW-Martha

The currency here is kip. However, they accept baht and U.S. dollars just about everywhere. Try to use baht or dollars if you can because the kip is useless outside of Laos ...other countries won't even exchange kip. This was our first communist country and it was very different from what we expected. In the early 1990's, the Laos government significantly loosened restrictions on businesses and travel. Earlier in the year, Luang Prabang didn't even have Internet. Today, there are several Internet shops (although the government is trying to restrict it's use). There are also TV's in several restaurants showing CNN news. There was plenty of free trade going on around here ...tourist were buying beautiful handicrafts in the street markets (I restricted myself to just taking photos). Also, Buddhism is widely practiced (you wouldn't think communism and religion could exist together??).However,...
