royal palace: luang prabang: show at the royal palace

by call_me_rhia

Theorethically this should fall into the tourist trap cathegory, since it's your average tourist show of traditional dances. However it's so simply (and frankly, quite badly) done that one can consider it as a sort of charity, or a help to the economy. It runs a few nights a week, late in the afternoon (6pm to 8 pm if I remember correctly), and it's about the only nightlife one can get in Luang Prabang. I think the price was 10000 kips no dress code

A bar in Luang Prabang: Nightlife in Luang Prabang

by coolbrian

I've already drunk so much local whisky "Lao Lao" before being taken to the bar by my Japanese and Laos friends. I was totally drunk so I had been sleeping all the time and I really didn't know what was going on there. By the picture my friends seemed to be enjoying a lot in that bar.Next time I go there, I have to be conscious.

Our nightlife in Laos. Yes that's border-crossing of Mekong River, you can't cross this river at night but you can spend your night there enjoying the Mekong river, beside the river is where all those backpackers' guesthouses and cafes, so why wait? You can play some internet, beer drinking, laughing and whatever you like. Make sure you try Beer LAO.

Really, you can do this any time of day or night- DRINK BEER LAO. I know I've said it before, and I'll say it again- it does the body good.Just ask Caroline pictured here. She likes Beer Lao. Just a wee-bit too much I'd say. It's cheap (5,000 kip at the store, 6-15,000 at a bar or resaurant). 10,000 kip to the $.

Nightlife can mean many things in Luang Prabang. It can be a drinking session with your new Lao buddies, dinner at a street side food stall in the night market, or it can be hours of dancing and bottles of Lao Beer at the Rama Hotel on Thanon Wisunalat near the intersection of Thanon Kitsalat. This place has to be the Studio 51 of Luang Prabang...actually it's the only nightclub that I know of in LP. It's really not bad even if it's a bit 'cheesy'. The live band plays butchered American songs, Thai, and Lao pop. It's very festive inside and the lighting is dark so you won't stand out like a sore thumb. The drinks flow in the club and everyone is very friendly. The clientele is mostly young Lao men & women...and it's pretty evenly divided. I was lucky enough to have the young owner of my guesthouse take me out so by the end of the night we must have had all of his girlfriends sitting...

Brothels and opium

by CliffClaven

In his classic travel book, 'The Great Railway Bazaar', Paul Theroux described Vientiane in the early 1970s: the brothels are cheaper than the hotels, marijuana is cheaper than pipe tobacco, and opium easier to find than a glass of cold beer. Well, things have changed since then, and the notorious nightlife of pre-revolutionary Laos has gone forever. The girls, no longer available, have become even more alluring as they dance smoothly in Vientiane's few night spots. Beer drinkers, at least, will be relieved to know that cold Beer Lao is now readily available.

Oohh - all a bit dodgy.: Oohh - all a bit dodgy.

Imagine a wedding reception with all the aunts and relatives their. A hall with tacky lighting and a cheesy band. Yeah, well that is Laos nightlife. this is as wild as it gets - although saying this - they do like their alcohol. Don't refuse a drink when it is offered to you - which could be at any time of the day. If you refuse a drink you are refusing the 'spirit' of Laos - literally too. Large pink fluffy slippers and a pair of 40 denier shimmery tights.

the only disco in luangprabang, and why is it the only disco in town cos no-one else could possibly match the pace!they serve beer at the table, what more can i say? normal street clothes are a good idea, they are not likely to find raver gear anything other than amusing

In Laos, bring a good book. I don't drink alcohol so I wasn't interested in going to local clubs alone. Even so, Lao authorities are a bit strict about interrelating with locals and allowing much nightlife.
