D enjoys a great cheap Indian in VV by richiecdisc Though I love to try local foods, there are times you want something more familiar. That does not have to be a burger even if you are American. I love Indian food and it is expensive back in the States so I try and get some when on the road, especially when in Asia. This place was a true oasis. It had an authentic Indian atmosphere and quite an extensive and inexpensive menu. The food was delicious and for 45000 Kip (6 bucks), we had a huge feast that would have cost five times as much back home.
We had a saag lamb dish, butter chicken, a biryianni, naan and roti breads, raita, and two lassis. Everything was fantastic and the portions were huge. street stall food in SE Asia can be a joy by richiecdisc If you venture halfway around the world and eat at McDonald’s you are missing the point of travel entirely. One good thing about Laos is there are no McD’s. But you can get caught up in eating what has become affectionately known as “backpacker staples.” There in nothing wrong with a banana pancake or veggie burger but you should at least make some effort to sample the local cuisine. And there is no better place to do this than in the local markets. The best thing about these places is you can see what you are getting before you eat it. Also, they are very cheap so if you cannot eat it, you do not waste much money. The one pictured is in Luang Prabang.
There were lots of great dishes in the local markets. Just look and point at what you want. The fish on a stick was particularly good as were the coconut pancakes. Yum. local delicacies abound by richiecdisc There were lots of great street stalls for food in the Lao capital of Vientiane. One of the great joys of eating in these places is interacting with the local merchants. The little girl pictured was quite friendly and was happy to see us come back each time we went, though you would not know it by the photo. Capturing the great smile of the Lao population must be one of the great elusions.
This particular stall had a great smoked pork on a stick. It was similar to Kasslerbraten in Germany so D felt right at home. The prices are incredibly cheap but always good to ask first to let the locals know you have some kind of budget to stick to. It was pretty far down and on a smaller street off to the right.

Drinking Coffee in Luang Prabang by bkoon I am not kidding when I say Loas has the BEST coffee. I tasted the BEST COFFEE in Laos. Unforgettable. The aroma and the texture when I sipped the coffee. Hmm… fantastic. When you place an order at a restaurant in Laos, make sure you tell them you want Lao Coffee with Sweetened Milk. If you do not indicate you want the local coffee, they will usually provide you with the 3-in-1 Nescafe. If you do not like to drink it hot, order the ice-coffee. It will be as good. In some places, when you order coffee, they will provide you with a glass of diluted Chinese tea. I guess this is how coffee is drank in Laos. Leave a Comment

Snuggly located, the Not Put restaurant is one of the better restaurants in Huay Xai. Food is reasonably priced with some kinda warm ambience to the place. There are small little huts where you can take your pick. If not, the main restaurant area is fine too. They serve nice Thai and Lao food. They only open for lunch and dinner. If you feel like eating there at 4pm, you are better off eating somewhere else. Preparing my ice-Lao coffee by bkoon By far the BEST LAO COFFEE IN LAOS. Also try the fried eggs with baguettes. You may try the plain baguette and dip in into the Lao coffee and it should taste yummy. Namphou Coffee also serves good “fur”, Lao noodles. The place is crowded in the morning and during lunch hour. On a hot and warm afternoon, it is nice to have an ice-coffee from Namphou Coffee. I had that and it was fabulous. MUST TRY : ICE-COFFEE 5,000 KIP Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: least expensiveDirections: Vientiane, the shophouses behind Namphou Square.
